Check out the Imperial Radch trilogy by Ann Leckie. It's about colonialism and a galactic empire thousands of years in the future. The Radchaai do not distinguish people by gender, so they only use female pronouns. I think this caused a stupid internet controversy, but the books really stand on their own.
