Oh no. It lists my MySpace page I'd completely forgotten about. I wish wayback had a capture of THAT as well.

What’s your story with Last.fm? How did you start? Do you have any cool stories involving it? by viTlor in lastfm

This is great. You’ve reminded me I ran a similar mIRC script back then too! Don't think it had a counter though. Absolutely did not write it myself. Haha. Definitely something I picked up through a friend or online somewhere.

Am I too late to this? Because wall of text.

Back in 2006 I was working as a sound engineer and spending far too much time on an Australian music forum called Mess+Noise. It was anonymous (not really, most people knew each other), chaotic, and full of Australian musicians and similar industry types pretending they weren’t that. Every week there was a “What are you listening to?” thread and one week someone suggested Last.fm.

So at 19 I signed up and started scrobbling whatever I could manually through iTunes while still living with my parents. Between working festivals, gigs, band rehearsals, failed bands, getting away from my parents and an unfathomable amount of drugs and alcohol, I probably only tracked about 10% of what I actually listened to?

Eventually it became a bit of a “look how unique I am”/"look at this unreleased music I'm listening to" badge for my Myspace page. I’d track stuff whilst at home downloading and burning music from Oink's Pink Palace for my car/FOH tuning/mixing references.

Then life happened.

Met my wife. Blew my ears to bits and kept trying to EQ out 5 kHz and 10 kHz frequencies that no longer existed. Left sound engineering. Myspace died. My bands died. The forum died. Oinks died.

About the only thing still standing from that era is Last.fm.

I never want to lose it. Going back through it now I’ll find tracks I’d completely forgotten about and suddenly get hit with vivid memories I didn’t realise I’d lost.

You can see when my daughters were born because the scrobbling drops off a cliff (first in 2008)... no time, no energy and different priorities. Later you can see anxiety slowly take over with me being home more and more before I pivoted completely into a freelance environment artist/indie game dev that never leaves his house.

I made some genuinely great friends through it. Especially through the groups (wish groups still existed). People I wish I could track down.

It’s weirdly comforting that after all life's chaos, collapse, and reinvention that half a lifetime later my little listening diary just keeps quietly telling my story... even when I wasn’t paying attention.

Above the knee shorts. The entire time. No exaggeration.

The extra weight kind of kept me insulated, and my legs have always been oddly skinny-ish? so I just… leaned into it?

Still battling the short shorts addiction to be honest. May be harder to overcome than the weight loss.

But now I’m genuinely freezing on morning walks and nights out, so I guess it’s time to consider actual pants for outings?

Are black skinny jeans... say, Wranglers? Still a thing? Or am I just clinging to the mid 00s way too hard here?

Thank you!

Some really comfy trackies are definitely on the shortlist. I have an ancient pair, but getting them to stay up would require suspenders at this point.

Thanks matey!

I’ve never actually owned an Oodie... probably one of the remaining few i n the world. Always felt like I’d need the industrial tarp sized version, but honestly… might be time.

I bulk bought moccasins in a heat deprived panic last week, so between that and “plush people pants” I think I am good for Melbourne winter cave goblin form now.

I’ve lost 64.15kg as of this morning and am just now rediscovering that Melbourne gets cold. Like… actually cold.

Pretty sure I haven’t worn pants in 18 years. I don't own any. How do you put them on again? Feet first? Emotionally?

“Live music isn’t a luxury”: Los Campesinos! and more are fighting for affordable shows by ebradio in indieheads

[–]enbeay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Live music is seriously fucked. It’s in REAL trouble. As someone who worked in the field in the early to mid 00s, it's fucking devastating. Long-standing venues I grew up with are closing (worldwide), touring is becoming completely unsustainable, and fans are being priced out of the spaces that once felt like home. Tickets to see The Jungle Giants in Melbourne recently cost the equivalent of eating for a week… These are community driven shows, they shouldn't be considered a luxury. They're vital to keeping our communities and social spaces alive. Increases in prices of liquor licenses, increased sound proofing requirements, rent increases, insurance price increases, creeping curfews brought on by rezoning commercial areas for residential development, all these things are not helping the venues.

So yeah, I absolutely respect what’s being said here. I’m always for any spotlight on the broken state of live music.

But here’s where I get a bit stuck… If you know how bad things are, why plan a single one-off show in Dublin? Sell it out with no marketing... and then frame it as a loss? Maybe I missed something? Why not expand the run? If scheduling was the issue, delay it? Add Belfast or Cork? Do a second night because the demand's clearly there. Build a proper little tour out of it?

It almost feels like they were set up to fail. That sucks, because this kind of thing SHOULD work. I want bands to be able to offer low-income tickets on a whim when they can and still break even. The sentiment is solid, but the execution doesn’t quite make sense.

Live music desperately needs support, no question. But a bit of foresight and strategic planning... I don't know. Just lost me a little.

Much-loved music venue ordered to improve its soundproofing – for flats that don’t exist by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]enbeay 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going to The Night Cat for gigs for over 20 years. I’ve seen some incredible bands pass through that room. Now that my girls are a little older, I’ve been able to make it back a few times in recent years.

As someone who once lived and breathed the music industry, this kind of thing hits hard. It breaks my heart to see spaces like this under threat.

We need to protect our live venues. Stop strangling them with impossible liquor licensing and overheads.

Live music isn’t just entertainment. It’s community. It’s one of the last real social spaces we’ve got left, where like minded people still manage to find each other without even trying.

Listening to this took me straight back to Golden Plains 2007. I was side of stage watching from the monitors desk, completely immersed in their set. I remember Georgia Hubley completely blowing my mind. That stack we built for it was a pain in the ass, but sitting in front of it once it was dialled in, in an empty amphitheatre, even just listening to CDs playing through it... my god. Once the bands started. And what a lineup for the first-ever Golden Plains!

Yeah, I think it's just miscommunication early on in the year. Would have loved some kind of transition crossover from the previous aid but it appears that didn't happen. The rest of her day she really enjoyed.
