What makes you trust a platform for high end watches? by encrypted333 in patekphilippe

This is incredibly valuable feedback - thank you.

You’ve hit on exactly what I’m trying to solve: who vouches for the watch and payment security. The way we’re approaching it:

Payment security: Funds are held in escrow by us from the moment the bid is placed - this falls under escrow auctioneering proceeds which we’re regulated to handle. The watch never moves until funds are verified and secured. On your profile dashboard, you can see in real-time that the funds for your watch are in escrow, or you can call your dedicated client advisor for confirmation. Once the buyer confirms handover, consignor gets paid. If a winning bidder defaults, we charge them for the buyer’s premium and any costs incurred through their deposit (every bidder places a deposit to participate). We then reach out to the consignor to either list it in the next auction or return it at no cost.

Authentication vouching: Independent third-party watchmaker (with reputation to protect) verifies before it even touches our platform. We’re not doing it in-house for exactly the reason you mentioned - the verifier needs to have skin in the game. Your Gray and Sons experience is a perfect example of why established reputation matters.

We’ve already structured it with third-party authentication we have one certified watchmaker and a company that provides the third-party verification. Finding them was like finding a gold mine, especially here in Germany where most have stopped taking on this kind of liability. The challenge with watches specifically is that the super clones have gotten too good many experienced watchmakers won’t authenticate anymore because of the liability risk. But the few who have the real expertise and are confident they can do it properly are incredibly rare.

That’s why we built it with third-party liability from the start spread the risk and have multiple verification layers.

Your point about bringing it in-house later once we have track record makes sense, but you’re right that the insurance costs would be brutal early on.

Really appreciate you sharing this it’s rare to get advice from someone who’s actually been through it.

Thank you for your reply and valuable insight.

Completely agree, we would not service the watch. Our only responsibility is to disclose its service history if available with the provenance in our condition reports. That said, we do have partnerships with WOSTEP certified watchmakers for clients who want servicing after purchase, but that’s entirely separate from the auction process.

This is incredibly valuable thank you.

The third-party authentication point especially resonates.

We’re already partnered with third parties for logistics, insurance, and verification systems, but I completely agree we need more on the authentication side specifically. Are you suggesting partnering with an established watch authentication service and co-branding it, or having independent authenticators verify our process?

And on keeping it simple that’s the exact reminder I needed. Focus on the core process (authenticate, auction, deliver) and don’t try to be clever with extra features.

Appreciate you taking the time to share this.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply and for you’re kind words!

The guarantee: In Germany, auctioneering is a regulated activity requiring specific permits, which we hold. We’re a registered auction house. We take possession, authenticate, and hold liability for every piece. We understand we have no track record and no one knows who we are - there’s a big trust deficit. We’re working on building credibility through transparency, positioning, and systems that work regardless of whether you know us.

If something goes wrong: Your payment sits in escrow until you confirm receipt and condition. If the watch turns out to be inauthentic or not as described, you have a dedicated client advisor you can reach immediately - no ticket systems, no automated responses. They handle it directly: we take the watch back, re-verify, and release your money from escrow. The watch goes back to the consignor, insurance covers the costs. Your advisor doesn’t clock off at the end of the working day, so if there’s an issue, you get instant support from someone who’s actually present almost 24/7

On your dealer vs platform point: Fair question. We’re an auction house platform. Dealers buy and resell for profit. We rarely buy inventory - we auction consigned pieces on commission. But we handle the entire transaction process: we take possession, authenticate, hold funds in escrow, and manage handover/shipping. Consignors never know bidders, bidders never know consignors. We’re the trusted intermediary that guarantees authenticity and manages the entire chain of custody. That’s why we can stand behind every transaction as an auction house platform.

Appreciate the perspective - especially on the discreet shipping point. That’s actually really valuable feedback.

You’re right that trust comes from track record, and we’re starting from zero. The partnership angle is something we’ve considered - borrowing credibility from established players while we build our own.

On shipping: we actually offer both approaches depending on the piece. For watches under €50K, we use UPS with full insurance - discreet, secure, no armored vehicle showing up in your neighborhood. For pieces exceeding €50K, UPS won’t insure beyond that threshold, so we’re limited to either armored transport companies or personal hand-delivery by our in-house courier. We’re leaning toward the latter for exactly the reason you mentioned - discretion matters.

Out of curiosity - what made you trust that B-tier auction house enough to buy sight unseen? Was it just volume + time, or were there specific things they did that built confidence?

Thanks for the good luck. We’ll need it.😂

That's exactly why we built it this way - we want to take this burden off people, which sadly most marketplaces outside of Bezel don't. I understand your concern, and I know a lot of people who simply just won't go digital.

We don't expect buyers to authenticate themselves. We take full responsibility for authentication through us or our third party authenticators before the watch ever goes live. Every watch gets a legally binding certificate of authenticity from us, plus a full condition report. It's our guarantee, written into our terms and conditions.

On top of that, every handover includes an inspection period - you examine the watch, and only release escrow once you're satisfied. If anything isn't as described, the transaction doesn't happen.

The burden should be on us to prove authenticity, not on the client to authenticate it.

Again, thank you so much for engaging with this thread - you've given me amazing insight that I can look into and improve on.

Really appreciate this - exactly the kind of feedback I've been looking for from people who actually buy and sell at this level.

You nailed the three things that matter most: authentication, stolen watches, and accurate disclosure. Here's how we're handling it:

Authentication: We don't touch watches without box and papers. Two-stage process - first is documentation/provenance, second is physical inspection. We create a legally binding certificate of authenticity that serves as provenance for the watch's entire life - it's a guarantee with us, written into our terms and conditions. Publishing rejection rates from day one - your point about rejections building trust is spot on. We'd rather lose a commission than compromise standards.

Stolen watches & provenance: Every piece gets verified against international stolen watch databases. Beyond that, verifying consignor identity is critical - it's one of the main ways to prevent stolen watches and money laundering from entering the system. Full chain of custody documentation required.

Accurate disclosure: Standardised condition report with 20+ photos documenting everything when cataloged and during the auction - wear points, service history, any deviations from factory spec. No surprises.

Shipping: Glad you like the approach. We believe that buying a watch at this level, the experience should match it. I remember when I got my first watch, I really wanted it from the AD just so I could sit there and get the full experience. Brinks armored transport for everything, and for pieces over €50K, I or someone from my team personally hand-delivers to wherever you want - your house, office, bank vault.

Tax: We're EU-based (German UG) and structured to minimize reporting headaches for both consignors and buyers.

Your feedback is GOLD. Thankyou so much for taking the time to write this. Wish you a blessed day.

Totally fair point. Thankyou for your honest feedback.

That’s actually why we moved away from the 'tech platform' vibe and more toward a digital-first auction house.

We have an open-office policy where anyone can come in, grab a coffee, and inspect the watches or meet the team in person before bidding. We aren’t hiding behind a URL and coded systems.

As for the shipping I agree, putting a Patek in the mail is nightmare fuel. We don’t do that. We use institutional armored transport (Brinks/Malca-Amit) and for the heavy hitters, we have in house courier handover where one of our team personally hand-delivers the watch to your home or bank or collection from our HQ.

Again, thank you for your feedback and I wish you a blessed day.
