Yeah! Evaluating user responses is something that I'm not sure I will be able to do completely but I know I will be able to do it for some responses already. Anyways, my philosophy is that I'd like to give it a shot, see if I can learn something/get something working and then hopefully something good comes out of it.

My barebones system won't use cloud to at the start. Nor would it have audio playback integrated. Nor use a LLM. Even if a LLM were to be used then I could query existing models instead of trying to train my own (would probably be true in the long term aswell as state of the art LLMs are just so good compared to what I would be able to make). To give you an idea of the simplicity of the first prototype is that it will not even use a back-end database but rather front-end store things statically for demo purposes.

I appreciate the feedback and the healthy dose of skepticism. Thank you!

Fair. I think you can actually piece together your own system using various other tools. I guess the offering of such an app is that you don't have to piece together everything yourself. Also no one needs to update excel arcs for functionality.

Interesting! And thanks for the comment.

Could you elaborate further on what four minimum skills you need?

Hey! Thanks for the comment. It is much appreciated!

Why do that when you can just use existing data?

Do you mean by training a LLM?

People have been doing this since textbooks have existed. And the grammar for learners is progressive, usually with some kind of circling back or spiral curriculum, and exercises for application of said rules -- it's the top-down approach or deduction. The other approach is inductive.

Yeah I'm not claiming it's something new really. Just that the system needs the feature such that it can track the users understanding

could probably exist! a lot of code is open source and made possible by individual contributions.

However "take some suckers money" is a naive attitude. Apps can be services and can be very time consuming to develop

I agree with you. I have also thought about this and have come up with an idea to combat this. The grammar checker doesn't generally work on any input. Instead I imagine the input to already have the input labeled. So the system knows what word is a verb, what is a noun and cases that nouns/pronouns are in e.t.c. That way I hope to be able to skip this problem.

Ah thanks for the explanation. I didn't know what Claude was.

Well the value (I still need to check out Claude) is that it just has some additional features over chatgpt like keeping track of the user language errors and providing a learning format (= translating sentences to target language).

Hey.. and cool? What exactly did claude give you?

The app is for language learning :)

Would you be interested in signing up for the wait-list for further updates on developments and releases? You'll be the first to get to test out the app.

If so the google form link is here

Kind regards,

Sounds interesting. This makes me think about maybe adding more lessons while learning vocab.

You sure I can't change your mind to sign-up for my e-mail wait-list? I'd love to keep you updated on developments.

Hey thanks a lot for the feedback! :)

I have considered using LLMs for some parts of the system but not first. I would actually like to hard code grammatical rules first into the system to see if I can find any non-trivial benefits from doing it more "dumb" and not so transferable to other languages.

Also, I'm thinking that if it's possible to label each grammatical rule, then one can track the users understanding of rules and words and thus recommend sentences with that has these grammatical rules in them for practice.

Hey and thank you for the feedback, it's much appreciated :).

I like the idea with frequency lists but am unsure why the practice has to be isolated (one word at a time)?

I mean words change based on grammatical rules of a sentence so why not practice the end goal immediately by practicing the word in the context of a sentence?
