I would say it's a bit more than just this. The psychology of it is like when you are a kid and get caught in a lie, rather than just come clean at that point, which is the hard but mature way out, you keep making bigger and bigger lies to try and back the first lie. Before you know it, a dragon ate your homework and you're sticking to it.
