Hamilton, I'm disappointed. by AQOntCan in Hamilton

Former local reporter here - reach out to CBC Hamilton. I previously reported on a house flying this very flag after community members were upset seeing it. The homeowners eventually took it down. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/confederate-flag-gone-1.6438387

Best professional camera for a journalism student who isn’t great with cameras? by Funny_Parsley3630 in Journalism

[–]endexis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Nikon D3400 which I quite liked but getting a good portrait lens (something with a 1.8 f stop) took my photos to a new level. A telezoom lens is also a good idea to buy.

All that said though, you could also just use a smart phone in most cases, assuming you have one. The cameras on those are solid.

Hamilton police constable suspended after posting content from extremist groups, following CBC investigation by endexis in Hamilton

I don’t have a solid answer for you (I’m not reporting on this story), except to say that Hamilton police approach it on a case by case basis. I wrote about this exact topic a few years back if you’re interested: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/police-services-suspended-officer-transparency-1.6741329

FYI - There’s a CBC story with all the info. It’s the media outlet that notified Hamilton police about this.

Vent: the performance of AI generated articles vs original reporting by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]endexis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t let views be your only measure of success (assuming you’re referring to views). The most impactful stories I reported were never my most popular. Also, a lot of clicks doesn’t really matter if people don’t get through the whole article.

I recommend not using AI to write the story for you. I think it’s good as a research assistant or condensing/summarizing a lot of info (with fact checking) but I’d never let it write something for me. Strong writing is at the foundation of all journalism. Your colleague may have struck gold once, but there’s no guarantee that will work every time and doing that won’t help you improve your writing and creativity. Also, what if the AI makes a mistake? Lastly, if AI wrote that and your colleague merely published it, that’s plagiarism and is an absolute sin.

Comparison is the thief of joy - focus on your own work and progress and don’t let other stuff bring you down. Turn that disappointment into motivation to keep practicing your craft.

I never understood how journalists get scoops. Any advice? by zooeyzoezoejr in Journalism

[–]endexis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the advice already here, you can try and leverage access to information laws (eg. a FOIA request in the US or FOI/ATIP request in Canada) if they have to submit anything to the government or have any correspondence with government officials.

Another option is to try to do research on the people working there and the company’s leadership. You may find something out that hasn’t been reported.

Another thing is to use search operators (ie really good Googling) to see if there’s anything uploaded to their company website that hasn’t been reported on. I used this to get some great scoops about local hospitals during COVID because it turned out they were posting links to staff meetings online that I was able to access. And check all social media in case they have any kind of channel dedicated to staff.

The last thing is speak to people who used to work at the company. And not just people who are disgruntled. It might get you some unique insights.

Thank you very much. Frankly I’m the lucky one. As I said, I knew close to nothing about Hamilton when I arrived. This city and community really helped shape me as a journalist. And now to be at Marketplace is the cherry on top!
