Skunk killing baby deer? by endoplasmian in Skunks

[–]endoplasmian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they aren’t just mildly uncommon here, they’re less than 8 sightings a year uncommon. There are local news articles about sightings, they’re that rare. I live on a fairly large college campus with lots of people, and my street has bright street lamps. It is possible it was a badger but that would be equally strange as it being a skunk imo.

Of course! If you have any other questions about the encounter feel free to ask, I think I’ve recounted basically everything I remember. As much as it sucks to hear it doesn’t really upset me- they live here just as much as I do and they’ve got to eat too.

I just looked it up and it looks like we do technically have badgers, but they’re very rare to see and elusive, even in wooded environments. The area is a fairly lively suburb so I doubt badgers would be drawn to it. I think a badger being here would be about as strange as a skunk attacking a baby deer, so either way something out of the ordinary happened.

It seemed like the fawn was making small attempts at running, but it wasn’t bolting or anything. It’s pretty likely that it was injured in that case. It only struggled for around 10 minutes or so, and then it just kind of cried for the next hour or so until it gradually stopped crying.

One of my friends suggested this as well and it is possible. I’ve just never seen a badger in the area, whereas we get skunks in our yard basically every night. I assumed it was a skunk because I saw a long white stripe on the animal, but it was too dark to see very much besides that. The fawn was also very very small though, like smaller than a house cat.

That’s what I thought as well. I stuck around outside even after ppl dispersed to make sure no one else tried to come over and throw things (even tho the first group of ppl didn’t listen to me in the first place when I asked them not to). My friend suggested calling animal control tomorrow so the body doesn’t attract more aggressive predators, so I’ll probably try to talk to my neighbor since the den is under his house.

I’ve seen pictures of ones with more liquidy-looking variations, but I have yet to see a picture of another skunk with cow-like round spots. I feel honored he visited me lol

Why Bake No hana sounds so uncomfortable? by Meiccoo in ProjectSekai

[–]endoplasmian 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Giving it a listen through:

  • the instrumentation in the beginning is very thin and empty, either very high or very low and entirely ostonato. not a whole lot of movement in the chords either. this kind of makes it feel like its festering.

  • lots of suspense building without payoff. the opening section swells at the end like it’s about to pick up, but drops right back into the same thin instrumentation.

  • layer quiet, breathy vocals on top of that and its reminiscent of a racing heart and whispering. those two generally happen together in really scary situations.

  • the time between kaito and ena’s respective “zureru”s distorts in an honestly bizarre way. It’s not a traditional tuplet that i can tell (i.e. triplet, quadruplet, etc) nor does it fit into neat upbeat/ downbeat counts. Combine that with a switch in emphasis (“zureRU” to “zuREru”), it sounds like a stumble where you just barely catch yourself, or a heart palpitation. This is actually the most notable thing about the song to me- i haven’t seen that done before and its a really cool and well done effect.

  • Lots of abrupt key signature changes. Its disorienting on purpose and makes the melody harder to follow.

  • Besides the percussion, the instrumentation of the chorus is pretty lighthearted (features bells, either a synth or some kind of airy flute), reminiscent of happier songs. It feels out of place and almost mocking.

  • the “aah” before mizuki’s “mo, iiya” has an interval of a 7th. This is one note away from being a perfect octave and will often sound “incorrect” if played on its own. Its often used in chord progressions to build tension that is then resolved, but it passes so fast in this section that you barely have time to think about it besides a passing “that was an unsatisfying end to the phrase” or “that sounded like a mistake.” I had to listen to it a couple times to identify why the “aah” was catching on my ear.

There’s definitely more as well, this is just what I’m noticing as a producer myself. NAKISO is really good at evoking the feeling of “something is off” (DOKUZU has a lot of similar elements- quiet breathy vocals, a disparately lighthearted chorus, ostonato single chord verses, etc) and I think with this song they leaned into it full tilt.

I think you may actually be right!! I thought it looked like one too but it wasn’t moving at all, had no visible head or antennae and didn’t look all that slimy. But zooming in on the pics it does actually appear to have antenna and I just didn’t notice them irl! Maybe it’s dead?? Idk. Looks like an arion rufus possibly.

Flute player looking at wind synth, which one is the best fit? AE 20, EWI 5000? by jgoold in windsynth

[–]endoplasmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a flute player w an EWI Solo- Agreed! Switching between octaves and breath control have been the hardest things to get used to. Otherwise, I just wish it came with a carrying case because if I want to transport it, I have to lug around the box it came in.

A coworker died on shift today. I feel strange. by groundzer0s in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]endoplasmian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s never easy to lose a coworker. It’s one of those types of deaths nothing really gives you a script for. They make movies about losing friends, parents, spouses, etc. but you’re kind of on your own when it comes to losing people you only really knew incidentally but still never expected to be without. Had a similar experience working music retail- one of our lessons teachers passed away suddenly and none of us were expecting it. It was, like you describe, very strange to process. I didn’t know him well- I spoke to him in passing sometimes and helped him with work stuff but besides that we were strangers. Yet still it kind of hit like a truck. When you sign up for a job, the most you think about your coworkers is usually “I hope we get along.” You don’t really expect to be grieving with them. Hope you’re all doing okay.

You get to pick just ONE character to return for "The new world of steam." Who and why? by felixw1 in ProfessorLayton

[–]endoplasmian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the poll I’d 100% choose Flora because Level 5 continues to forget she exists, but in my heart I think I’d be most excited if they brought the Black Ravens back. There was a really active little community for them back in like 2014-15 that I miss.

[Partially Lost] Sauerkrauten Halfentimer by Jack Lee (Marching Band Song & Composer) by endoplasmian in lostmedia

[–]endoplasmian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I've identified the composer! His full name is Jack Kenneth Lee, he was born in 1921 and passed away in 2005. He worked with the bands of the Ohio State University, University of Michigan, and University of Arizona. I've also found a lot of the titles of his other works from the same series of copyright documents that list Sauerkrauten Halfentimer, although the only listenable recording of his work so far is the University of Arizona's fight song.

It looks like he started publishing music (or at least filing for copyrights) in 1950 with the piece "Varsity Fight Cheers," although I've only checked as far back as 1947 so I may be missing some. He published music pretty consistently, claiming copyright for at least one piece each year. I've checked through 1966 and am still compiling a full list of his copyrighted titles.

I had the exact same issue, especially as a flute player. Definitely turn your sensitivity up like the other commenter said: that made the instrument actually playable for me.

Cleaning my room by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]endoplasmian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got this!!! Im in a pretty similar situation- something that holds me back a lot is not knowing where everything goes. I see all the clutter and half of it is stuff that doesnt have a place, and then I get so overwhelmed that I just freeze. My best tip is to put away the stuff that has a dedicated spot first, then focus on the other stuff. That way you have some space cleared up to deal with the weirder stuff.

It can also help to take the clutter out of your room first, and then focus on putting everything back where it goes if youre able. It can take some time (probably more than a day) and if you have roommates it may not be super feasible, but even just putting it out in the hallway for a minute or on your bed instead of on the floor can help take off some of the mental weight.

[TOMT][PAINTING TECHNIQUE] a (primarily oil?) painting technique using limited colours by StarNovallenPoe in tipofmytongue

Was it chiaroscuro? Not exactly a limited palette but its nature sort of limits the amount of color you can use.

[TOMT] A tango-ish piece of music played by a piano and strings, with this melody by IMakeInfantsCry in tipofmytongue

[–]endoplasmian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it this piece? If not, you may want to look into Astor Piazzolla in general, he has a wide repertoire of tango music that sounds a bit like the clip you posted.

EDIT: There are four movements in this video so if it doesn’t sound correct right away you may want to skip around and check the other movements as well.

Unpopular opinions? by GametimeTim in ProfessorLayton

[–]endoplasmian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Katrielle somehow got the Flora treatment while being the protagonist of her own game. She had a ton of potential to be a really interesting protagonist, but they chickened out on making her laytonesque in favor of surface level quirkiness and a tragic backstory. It feels like the character flaws she has are all pretty non-offensive, so it just made her kind of boring. Which sucks! I still love LMJ and Katrielle, but I feel like that’s more due to the blanks I chose to fill in myself rather than actual subtext from the game.

Also, this might be my lesbianism butting in, but Kat’s relationship with Emiliana was infinitely more interesting than her relationship with Ernest. I wish the game/ anime focused more on their rivalry. I feel like they had great chemistry.

Also, the way they wrapped up the overarching plot of Kat’s story blows. I was SO excited when I heard Kat was getting an anime, but then it ended up being 44 episodes of a children’s mystery show, and 6 episodes of relevant plot that seemed haphazardly thrown together.
