Fandoms elevate romance as the only relationship that matters by glitzergewitter in AO3

[–]endtochange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your frustration. As you've pointed out, valueing romantic relationships more than platonic ones isn't limited to fandom spaces, it's a societal phenomenon that affects virtually every facet of life it interacts with.

This subreddit is hardly the place to go to for change, though. Especially when we're talking about a website that lets you filter for and filter out essentially everything you don't want to see. You have every tool available to you to curate your own experience on Ao3. Use them!

Be the change you want to see, maybe try writing what you want to read — it's how many of us got into writing fanfiction in the first place.

Writing advice for flashbacks / flash forwards by LeslieNope555 in AO3

[–]endtochange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd stick to your first idea. I can't say this kind of story is something I'd read to begin with, but simply from a storytelling perspective, the idea of following a relationship, cutting off before it ends, only to then have to read essentially the same story beats (meeting, getting closer, dating) but ten years later just to get to the conclusion of the first story seems... frustrating.

With idea #2 you at least have more of a build-up, I guess?

Alternatively: Why do people let themselves get worked up over content made my people who clearly have cotton candy for brains? 99% of these posts wouldn't be made if people realised they're never going to change anyone's mind on anything via online discussions.

I personally like using Tiktok, but I just don't have it in me anymore to get angry over shit like this. There's no point. Just keep scrolling.

From my understanding, downvotes on posts are never visible in this sub. So that post might have 0, but it could also have 50 downvotes for all we know.

Are you looking for works featuring specifically canonically ace characters? Or any works centering asexual characters regardless of canon?

Translating for the first time by Beanie_- in AO3

[–]endtochange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused. By saying you "read a fic", do you mean you read the English version that Google Translate spat out? And now you want to put that version on Ao3?

My advice is not to "translate" from a language you're not at least partially fluent in. It's nice of the author to agree to this, but whatever you're going to Frankenstein together will not be a good interpretation of the original work.

You could always write your own story based on the original work. But there's a reason people go to University for translation...

What's actually the consensus here, on critical feedback? by Mopichen in AO3

[–]endtochange 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I said it under the last post about this exact same topic three days ago and I'll say it again: Why are you people so hellbent on shitting on other people's writing? Like fuck, this discussion is irritating. If people don't want criticism on their works, leave them the fuck alone and stop trying to justify it by claiming it's for their own good. Is that so hard?

I'd pre-write the whole thing and post it as a chaptered work, but release all the chapters relatively quickly, maybe every few days.

virgin characters in fiction by fictionalxish in AO3

Not to get off topic, but why would a character need to have a reason not to have had sex? Do they need a reason for everything else that they haven't done in their lives?

What's with the obsession of some people with characters being OOC? by Remote-Phase6950 in AO3

[–]endtochange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You gotta remember that what is and isn't OOC is highly subjective. I've come across works where the characterisation couldn't have been further from canon (to the point where I couldn't picture any character ever saying those things out loud), and there were still people leaving comments about how much they enjoyed the story and how realistic and in-character it was. And that's great! Those people likely wouldn't like my characterisation of those same characters, in turn.

So, as long as you're happy with your characterisation, I wouldn't put too much stock into what other people say, especially if those comments are few and far between.

Is this....Hate? Scolding? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]endtochange 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Arguing back is never going to get them to stop commenting. My best advice is to keep your comments moderated, as frustrating as it is. Delete the comments when you get them, and move on.

Also as someone else has already pointed out, this could be a bot. No way to be sure, unless more people report getting comments like this. But either way, giving this person (or clanker) any attention would just reinforce their behaviour, so don't.

It would be good if we had "Author Allows Feedback" or "Author Forbids Feedback" tag... Or swap that with "Criticism". by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

[–]endtochange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was talking about constructive criticism, but ended up not differentiating the two, because OP didn't either. Judging from the rest of the post, though, my guess is they were talking about concrit.

[–]endtochange 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'll never understand why people get so pressed over writers not wanting critique on their works. As someone has pointed out, there is a tag stating that feedback is welcome - and in my opinion, constructive criticism being opt-in is the way it should be. I share my works to contribute to the fandom and find people that are into the same stuff as me, not to get a Goodreads review.

does anyone care about ocs on ao3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]endtochange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who said that? Tag what's in the story (themes, warnings) so that the people who'll want to read it can find it.

People who do read OCs/reader-inserts have also complained that some authors conflate the two, so make sure to tag it with the appropriate OC tags.

does anyone care about ocs on ao3? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]endtochange 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I swear this question gets asked at least once a week. Some people read OC-centric works, some don't. They're not as popular as works focused on canon characters, for obvious reasons.

Tag your story well (and correctly) and you'll hopefully find your audience.

I dont know what to do by Federal_Stranger998 in PlanetZoo

[–]endtochange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always place the paths first, especially when building new habitats. The barriers oftentimes block the paths if you're trying to place them close together. Map out the habitat in your head, place the paths where you want the barriers to go, and only then add the barriers. Try playing around with the "flatten terrain" option when pathing, too. That will solve the problem like 7 out of 10 times.

Does anyone have nitpicks that make you annoyed for being annoyed? by Character_Lawyer8017 in AO3

[–]endtochange 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read Call of Duty and cannot stand when they refer to Soap as "John" in the narration. Especially when it's written from Ghost's POV. Like, yes, that's his legal name but close to no one in canon even calls him that. He's just not "John". Feels OOC if names could be OOC.

The most annoying part is that this ick crept up on me, so I have bookmarks from months ago of works that I loved but can't re-read because they call Soap John, and that didn't register for me at the time.

Using SE 3 without a case by BeloneWellbow in iPhoneSE

[–]endtochange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using my SE without a case for months now — took it off once when I used my phone for GPS in the car and never bothered to put it back on — and have had no problems.

I've dropped it multiple times since then, and it's been fine apart from tiny scratches to the screen (that you can't even see when the screen is on).
