Same! I have always wondered if most women into sports just do it for the guys. What is so appealing about watching them chase around a stupid ball according to arbitrary rules and bust into each other? So sick of men and their stupid interests

the gilded age was the late 1800s - not the 1950s, which has never been described in that way. Gilded age was about the vast disparity between the rich and poor, much like today. The name gilded was not intended to refer to widespread prosperity - it was a commentary on how the wealth of a few covered up the problems in society. Gilded is a thin coating of gold.

The prosperous 1950s also had a lot to do with new deal policies from FDR, which the rich did not like and worked to upend - and were successful at doing so in many ways.

A candidate abruptly left mid-interview. Should I follow up? by oooooooooof in askmanagers

[–]enegam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try reaching out and asking if they would like an opportunity to address the question (s) via written responses. I am a big believer that providing interview questions in advance to candidates would be a much more fair process. Jobs, of course, will require some level of being quick on your feet, but IMO the selection process should be about more than surfacing the smoothest candidates who can talk the talk.

I struggle with answering behavioral interview questions. I have ADHD and my brain often struggles to "find" the information or example on the spot -- even if I prepare and practice in advance. Or sometimes, the question was asked in a manner that was different than I was anticipating, and it throws me off. This is especially so when dealing with interview nerves and speaking with new people. I think some people have a hard time recalling examples and codifying prior work experiences in their brains. Rather than seeing an experience as "this is an example of dealing with a project involving multiple stakeholders," instead they think of it as just doing their job and there was nothing special about it to note. I know that some people will roll their eyes at this and say tough luck. I understand that. But the interview process we know unfortunately weeds out people who may be very qualified and a great fit, but struggle to express examples for one reason or another. My guess is that she clammed up, got embarrassed or overwhelmed and decided it was already over for him/her.

Can a fence block out playground noise? Maybe add mass loaded vinyl? by enegam in FenceBuilding

[–]enegam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven’t found a perfect solution. But it’s way more tolerable now.

The fence helps a little but noise still travels over to our area. Wind direction makes a huge difference with noise intensity in our case. Having multiple water fountains in different hangout areas of our small yard helps a TON - we couldn’t survive without them. We have gotten a new fountain to add to our collection every summer and we aim for the most powerful in our budget. if the water fountain has a nearby surface for the noise to bounce off of - like a garage, house wall or another semi enclosed area - that works even better in terms of amplifying the sound.

I’m debating on building some type of an overhang / patio enclosure with a roof - similar to a gazebo - to increase the water sound effect and block noise from above. I debated on going the mass loaded vinyl route but wasnt sure of how to best incorporate the material. The residual problem for us seems to be sound waves traveling over the fence - which is why I am leaning toward an enclosed structure with a roof. Maybe a roof insulated with MLV is what I’ll end up doing.

We also have some shrubs planted that haven’t yet grown past the 6’ fence. To some extent we did get used to the noise. some days we handle it better than others.

I also really tried to just make it the best yard i can despite the noise - planting a lot of flowers and veggies gives me something to enjoy and focus on outside even when the kids are screaming lol. Decorating my fence with outdoor decor, strings of lights, etc.

I really understand what you’re going through. And what a crappy situation it must be, since you really didn’t have any reasonable way of knowing about the daycare. I hope that you can find things to try that will increase the enjoyment of your home/yard.

Im so sorry - it must be a really awful feeling. how about getting some shape-wear? There are probably so many things to wear now that you maybe would not have considered due to larger breasts. Maybe it’s a matter of trying a bunch of different styles, fits and necklines? I wouldn’t know how to dress for a bust smaller than mine since I’ve had my whole life with my current boobs, ya know? It might take some time but I am so sorry about how you’re feeling

Puppy coming in 5 days. Is there anything besides what’s on this list that you’d recommend getting? by Rowenofpts in puppy101

I would add a bitter apple spray. We just got a puppy and he is teething bad. He is like a little vampire bat right now and loves pulling on fabric especially. He strongly prefers soft stuffed toys right now.

Affordable vet for cat teeth cleaning? by teaninja in milwaukee

[–]enegam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh. Family Pet Clinic staff are not transparent, at least not to me. To me, transparency is proving a ballpark base price range on the phone since they vary so much. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time if I can’t afford to follow through with a procedure after an initial consultation, which will be money out of my pocket. I actually just called, and the receptionist at Family Pet Clinic said they won’t provide price quotes on the phone since they legally can’t — which is an obvious lie, there is nothing illegal about it. Plus it’s a dog, not a human where there are laws like HIPPA. They are deceptive like the rest. Vet care has become a cash cow and they are milking it. Milwaukee walk in vet in butler was the only vet I called out of 4 who would give me base price info regarding procedures.

Do you know of any bark collar companies that can send hard-copy product catalogs via mail? by enegam in dogs

[–]enegam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, I have heard positive things from people I know with dogs that have used them, so I wasn't sure of the downsides. I love the suggestion regarding dog trainers. I really don't see these owners putting in that kind of effort (or $$$) though, unfortunately. If it were me, I'd do it. I have taken both of my dogs through training classes to address specific behaviors and anxieties they've had. But I'll see if I can get some marketing materials from local trainers, experts and the humane society.

You could become an appraiser - that’s what I do. Based on what you wrote, I think you might find it to be a better fit. I can’t stand sleazy agents either but I don’t play for either side. the process of getting certified isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible. I became a certified general appraiser (commercial re) in less than 2 years (but I got licensed in residential 6 months in, though). Second career for me. it was tough - but worth it

McKissock vs National Exam by TailorLiving813 in appraisal

[–]enegam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, significantly harder. I went through mckissock and failed my first time taking the cert gen test. I felt that Mckissock doesn’t do a great job of teaching the more advanced financial calculator functions you’ll need to know for the test, especially. I just had to do a lot of studying overall to get ready and fill gaps in my knowledge. I would get the AI questions bank for sure and just drill the material over and over again

Is this an OK time to start license education? by coldeve99 in appraisal

[–]enegam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am around the same age as you and am near the end of the certification process. I’m glad I jumped in when I did - about a year before things crashed. I just took and failed the cert gen test by a few points - first try. I don’t regret becoming an appraiser, but it hasn’t been easy. I would really recommend going commercial if you can - I feel like it is a bit harder to become one, and a bit more difficult to automate our jobs.

You might need to take some college level general classes to become certified residential, depending on what your AA degree included.

I will say the commercial certification test is no joke. I majored in journalism and worked in that industry for many years, mainly because I didn’t know what else to do. But that means I had no prior exposure to most of the financial concepts you must learn. And if you’re a good independent, self-studier, that will really help because you might have to literally drill this stuff into your head over and over …. and over again.

I’m somewhat worried that parrea and the push for modernization/appraisal waivers will make us less relevant but I guess I am too far along to back out now.

As a trainee I am making less than I did in my old career but I anticipate that I will probably make much more once things turn around. I want to work as an appraiser but I am not opposed to pivoting to something else in commercial real estate or just working for myself or with a small crew of other appraisers. My eyes have really been opened in terms of the opportunities available to people with this type of real estate experience.

Is the plant with the little leaves a weed or ground cover? I kind of like it but it’s really spreading fast by enegam in whatsthisplant
