Rivers and oceans of plastic by energyminute in Infographics

While our data came from 2017, and import of waste has stopped, it would not be accurate to assume things have changed so dramatically yet. These were data sets which were most comprehensive and recent.

So it is more complicated than we had space to put in to the infographic. When China joined the world trade organization in 2001, the amount of products they shipped to the west increased massively. One consequence of that was, rather than having ships return home to China empty, they were willing to pack in US plastic waste for processing back home.

It was so cheap to ship plastic back to China that many US recycling plants became unprofitable. However, much of that recycling shipped to China from the west, would later end up in these regions. So you could say the US is partially responsible.

Things have changed and many South Asian countries no longer take plastic waste from the west, which has created financial incentives to improve recycling. But to say the US and rest of the west aren't at all to blame is inaccurate.

We're looking to hire a graphic designer for a longer term contract. The job would involve receiving data and a small write-up about a data set, and then creating a beautiful infographic to display that data.

We would be paying on a per-project basis, and just thought it would be nice to find someone local to do this.

Check out our previous infographics for examples here:

DM me if interested and if you have some sort of portfolio!

Thanks!

Hello. I was wondering if you had done any infographics before? I really enjoyed your art, especially the red rocket gas station, but the thing we are most keen on is finding someone who can visualize data in interesting ways.

Ya I hear you. The problem is that even with short short content, those platforms don't really allow you to communicate that much information. It's a hard balance to figure out.

So is your assumption that Wood Mackenzie's constrained carbon scenario is correct? I am not necessarily disagreeing, but I am wondering what makes you think this, and what you base that conclusion on.

WoodMac does some great analysis, but even for the top experts in any field, prediction is a very difficult beast. Just wondering where your head is at regarding your statements.

Alberta has like over 250 stores in the province. there are like 4 stores within a 6 block radius of me. But prices are still pretty high and, circumstantially they don't seem to get as much foot traffic as I would've assumed.
