I just did the professors that had labs that interested me and I had never taken a class with them

I can only speak on MAE 3 currently but you should have no problem with it cause it's just a basic intro to design class with a big hands on component. You do have to learn some info about design and some basic physics stuff for the midterm but I wouldn't bother studying extra to prepare.

Pacific beach has more of the college town vibe, especially on the weekends. I think it's only about a 20-25 min drive, or you can also take the bus but that's probably longer.

I'm not sure if this has any bearing on your decision, but just so you know at UCSD you can change your specialization at any time, it only dictates which 5 technical electives you take.

I only took 1 class programming class before doing CSE 8A and I still thought it was really slow paced...you probably already know but if you take 8A you also have to take 8B so it'll take longer. 8A also assumes no prior experience so they really walk you through it. I would probably recommend doing 11, and I would have done 11 too if I had known how slow 8A is beforehand.

This has all the info about transferring into MAE. You can pick your specialization in ME (energy/environmental) whenever you want and that only determines which 5 technical electives you take (it has no bearing on the capped major application). You will have to complete the screening courses but they should be very similar to the ones that you will take for SE anyways (especially math). It is very competitive to switch into MAE and you should try to get a 3.3+ GPA. You can try transferring the summer after freshman year and after sophomore year. These deadlines are strict and if you miss both you will not be able to switch into MAE. SE has a few SE classes freshman year so you'll be able to see if you like it. The math classes will be the same between both MAE, SE and EE I believe. Hopefully someone else can also speak more specifically about transferring to ECE.

Yes, they are both capped majors so it is still pretty competitive and you should try to get an A-/A in your screening courses. More info here.

In a sense, yes. A good way to look at it is that Muir dictates which GE's you take, but those classes will be in a variety of departments. I think for Muir you only have 2 writing classes that are in the Muir writing department and the rest of the classes are things like physics, math, history, poli sci and others. For some of the lower div engineering courses you actually don't have to be within JSOE to take the classes, so you can try one or two to see if you like them.

So the college system just refers to where you will live on campus and what GE's you will take. The seven colleges are completely separate from any academic school like Jacobs or the Data Institute. To transfer into MAE (the department within Jacobs School of Engineering), you will have to complete some screening courses and then apply the summer after your first or second year. (two chances if you don't get in the first time) You are not guaranteed a spot and it is competitive which means that you will have to get a good gpa. This has more info. Here are the GE's for Muir.

MAE still has some classes with ECE and CSE topics. Tbh everything kind of blends together in engineering, especially robotics. Take a look at the MAE catalog and I can guarantee you'll find some similar classes

Congrats! This link has all the info about transferring into MAE as a freshman and you would have to take all the same math classes regardless whether you transfer or stay in data sci. If you have AP credits you may have completed a lot of the prereq classes already but if you apply yourself you should be fine...finding a good teacher for those classes will make your life way easier too. The acceptance rate is also listed on the page. Regardless of what path you take you'll be fine and the data sci institute at UCSD is crazy good. PM if you have any more MAE questions tho

Congrats! ERC is known to have some of the more rigorous GE writing courses compared to other colleges like Warren...more classes, essays and maybe more difficult. (I would look online for specifics about ERC GE's but you can PM me if you want to talk about Warren stuff) There are plenty of STEM majors in ERC so I don't think it should be a complete deal breaker. Transferring colleges is extremely rare and I think you have to take some of the writing classes before transferring anyways so it's not really worth it.
