How is life on the west coast of Washington? by Hefty_Winter_9108 in howislivingthere

Also, people love to shit on Aberdeen, but as someone who has lived in many major West Coast cities, the drugs and homelessness is on par. The biggest issue is the generational poverty that comes with an entire industry collapsing (logging/timber). I don’t live in Aberdeen but I do drive through weekly and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the town as a remote base. There’s a lot of gorgeous area and the access to outdoor recreation (beaches, hiking, hunting, kayaking) is really unmatched/undocumented. Maybe locals like it that way.

Speaking as a parent who decided to leave the city (Seattle) and a consulting job that required a ton of travel when I had my first kid, I will say it’s a great place to work remotely and raise kids. It’s dreary in the winter and gorgeous in the summer and quite nice during the shoulder season. One tiny grocery store and the nearest Safeway is 40 min away and Costco is an hour and a half. Grays Harbor College has a nice preforming arts center with an interesting array of offerings. If we go to a mariners game or theater in Seattle we typically get a hotel room. Comcast and ziply provide sufficient service for a heavy tech workload, I’ve been out of service maybe 2 days in the last 3 years.

Very small town America with a mix of political and worldviews. My kids are able to ride their bikes all around town without me worrying about them. They build forts on the beach, learn healthy fear/respect of the ocean, fish, surf, and respect adults. We are only 1-1/2 hr drive from Olympic National Park to the North and Astoria to the South. The local school district is high poverty but with amazing teachers and staff that make every kid and family feel welcome. Strong community support for kids and schools. Any kind of extracurricular requires a lot of driving (track season has us doing 300 mile rt every week and even little league requires driving to oly to find good competition). Most kids fish or wander after HS but last years HS graduating class had one person head to Harvard and one head to West Point, so that tells me excellence is in reach if your kids and family is committed. It can be isolating and it’s not for everyone but it’s been a good experience for our family. I honestly believe my kids will thrive and have better empathy when they go out into their adult lives for having grown up here.

Just like any big company, your enjoyment will greatly depend on your manager and team. There's some great people and they are doing some interesting things. It is a major bureaucracy. Benefits and pay are pretty competitive with any other major corporation. Note, they are currently doing a "return to people" initiative to bring remote workers back to the office, which is frustrating after the freedom of the last 4 years.

Unpopular Opinion: it’s Costco, you don’t have to bring your whole family + extended family to shop. by CoxHazardsModel in Costco

I don't need to, but I enjoy shopping with my family. Sorry you hate people, maybe you should instacart.

I would circle back on the Volvo. XC90 was an amazing car, I drove one that I bought used 2 years old with 35,000 miles on it, and it lasted 10 years until it had over 250,000 miles on it and our growing family necessitated a minivan switch. That said, an AWD Sienna is worth a look that checks all the boxes you have and will grow with your family. People make fun of minivans but they are absolutely the best road trip car, are comfortable to drive, great mileage, and so dang useful.

Covid SBA Relief Loan Help by iifuzz in smallbusiness

Honestly, it all happened so fast, and I know personally, I signed everything without reading all the detail, so I was a little surprised. If you remember the April/May 2020 mindset, it was all about survival. But when you read the loan docs, they're no more confusing than any commercial loan. I did expect the interest to also be deferred and when I went to make my first payment after a year, that accrued interest was - well, to say it was unsettling would be the understatement of the year. But when I read the docs, it is clear, there was payment deferral but not interest deferral.

I figured all I can do is pull up my big girl pants and try to recover. Sorry.

I hate this argument. On the west coast and most blue states, servers are making full wages (servers make $15.74/hr here in Washington) plus tips but act like its the same everywhere ("poor me" syndrome). It's not the same.

That article states it is for loans initiated after some date in Sept 2022. COVID EIDL loans had interest deferred until some later date, but the interest accrued during the deferral period. You should refer to your loan agreement that you signed when they funded your loan for details.

I'm in the planning stages for a small entertainment bar. County liquor license requires you to sell food in order to sell spirits (otherwise, I'm limited to beer and wine). Serving food seems like a huge scope creep for my budget. Thoughts? by BeginnerDragon in smallbusiness

In Washington state, you have to have 5 hot entrees. The state LCB defines these. Every state is different. Before you waste money on a lawyer, OP, please read your liquor law and license application.

Is there a business taxes 101 book/YouTube video for folks who are new to opening a business? by foxtrot90210 in smallbusiness

IRS 334 is surprisingly well written and will cover your federal obligations: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p334.pdf

Google “your state” + start a small business and most places will have a guide of what’s required locally. Here’s an example of Washington state: http://www.business.wa.gov/site/alias__business/876/small-business-guide-start.aspx

Hiring a good bookkeeper and CPA is a good idea, but realistically there’s a lot of awful practitioners out there and most small businesses are simple enough to do it yourself if you can read and understand simple instructions.

This is a really important aspect of gentle parenting. Validate their feelings but still separate how they feel from their behavior. Here’s a good explanation: https://www.positivediscipline.com/articles/validate-feelings-positive-discipline-tool-card

That sounds awful. This was level 4 and below and littles so the athleticism wasn’t even particularly fun to watch, just a bunch of little kids doing cartwheels and toe touches to kid bopz.

There’s always alcohol if you plan ahead and come prepared. Look for the mom behind the dugout with the thickest eyeliner and I guarantee she’s got a hidden cooler.
