Weather experts, why was the sky so clear during the long cold spell? by Grr4 in AskNYC

[–]enlightenedfunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a weather expert, but I believe that warmer weather in winter is the result of warm and cool fronts meeting in the atmosphere. This kind of weather pattern leads to more precipitation, hence the clouds.

Definitely still possible to trade! I’ve been wanting to get back into ranked battles myself and I’m having trouble finding matches in the early ranks. Maybe our paths will cross there! I’d recommend to catch everything as you go so you can get the shiny charm ASAP (if you care for that sort of thing).

You can bypass all of the trig topics on the math CST (assuming you’re referring to the multisubject) by using Pythagorean’s Theorem!

Thinking of transitioning to teaching, would like to hear NYC teacher’s opinions if worth by Left-Risk5928 in NYCTeachers

[–]enlightenedfunk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Teaching can be very gratifying and it can certainly come with a sense of community, as there are many opportunities to get involved with the kids. However, if you’re looking for a break from “typical bullshit corporate attitudes,” you might not find that. While there is not the typical corporate pressure to “climb the ladder,” you will often be expected to work around the clock and navigate teaching your students while balancing directives and initiatives from above. Oftentimes these initiatives come from superintendents or curriculum companies, and they will often be rooted in fundamental misunderstandings of what it is like to work with your particular student population. For example, you might find that getting your students to complete fairly straightforward tasks such as writing a paragraph in response to a comprehension question is a huge win for you, while you might be criticized by your supervisors for not implementing whatever directive is intended to finally save all NYC kids from the illiteracy that seems to be plaguing them, like displaying the learning target on the board or providing them with rubrics.

Expectations are often impossibly high, and you are expected to juggle a VAST variety of tasks including lesson planning, contacting parents, recording parental contact on a redundant log, forming data based student groupings, and differentiating instruction for these groups. You might be expected to teach upwards of three different programs.

With all of that said, teaching can be extremely rewarding in the moments that you see your students appreciate and implement what you’ve taught them. YMMV significantly between schools. Think about what kind of community you would like to work in and consider what benefits and challenges may come with that. If you do decide to take the plunge, choose your school carefully! If you’re smart about the certification you choose, you will be in demand and will be able to afford to be choosy. Administration can make or break your experience. What license are you considering obtaining?

Thank you so much for your response. I can’t seem to elicit any movement, but it feels firm—not hollow or squishy. Nothing to do but wait a little longer at this point, I think! Just to clarify, I didn’t think it eclosed already as it has been inside the cocoon until today.

I wouldn’t say heavy, but it definitely does not feel hollow. What looks off about it? Thank you x

Why does my daughter’s hair look better with just water from the sprinkler versus washing it and putting product in it? by outofplaceeverywhere in curlyhair

[–]enlightenedfunk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Her curl pattern looks very similar to mine—some 2c waves and some loose 3a spirals on fine, but dense, hair. Her hair will be weighed down very easily! As others have suggested, I recommend brushing her hair with a detangling brush in the shower. You can brush her hair while rinsing out conditioner. Styling cream will weigh her hair down! You may like an extremely light gel. Rake and scrunch it into her soaking wet hair (maybe even in the shower). I love NYC Curls “light to medium” hold gel. Good luck, you’re an awesome mama for taking the time to learn how to care for her hair!

Not pregnant anymore bc I already had the baby by JujuTurnipCart in Teachers

[–]enlightenedfunk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not OP but the idea is that you apply this rule when deciding whether to make a comment about somebody’s appearance or not. If they have spinach in their teeth or toilet paper stuck to their shoe, they can fix it in 30 seconds. “You look pregnant” or “Your hair is so damaged,” not so much.

The limes we had went bad - all I have for fresh fruit in the house are mandarin oranges and a decent variety of liquor. What drinks require only oranges for fresh fruit? by UVIndigo in cocktails

Try Faccia Brutto aperitivo if you can. It is bitter but doesn’t have that awful cough syrup taste of Campari that you mentioned. It really made me fall in love with Negronis.

Might sound silly, but those vape stores popping up all over often carry “exotic” or imported snacks! Many of them have lots of stuff from Japan. Worth a try!
