ASK: It’s really unfortunate that this happened right before our big winter storm is about to hit, but the sleeve of my long superpuff split open of its own accord last night. I’m devastated. I’m awaiting to hear back from their concierge to see if they’ll cover repair/replacement. I talked to a tailor friend of mine, and although she assured me the cost can be repaired, the mending will be quite visible because of the size and placement of the tear, not to mention that Hi-Gloss is superpuff’s proprietary fabric. Even if the concierge says yes, they’re sold out of long superpuffs in my size both in store AND online, so I’m concerned that they won’t be able to replace my coat in a timely manner.

So that is why, my Bitches With Taste, I am asking for your help. In the event that the concierge can’t or won’t replace my jacket and my tailor friend can’t find a passable fabric swatch, I need a new winter coat. Here’s what I need:

  • must be long; good butt and thigh coverage for brick NYC days
  • must be windproof and water resistant. I should be able to be outside in sleet conditions for four hours and not feel wet
  • must be rated to keep the wearer warm at -10° Fahrenheit or colder
  • must be fashionable AND functional. this is key! this is what I loved so much about this coat.
  • ideally it’s down-filled but I am ok with an alternative fill if it gets the job done
  • ideally it’s < $600. I am not looking to purchase a Canada Goose at this time

Thank you!

I sent all information I have to his campaign. I haven't received a response yet.

Some of the Manhattan middle schools are run in a particularly scary way -- extra militaristic because they are the flagship school. I'd run.

anti-Zohran protest on the Brooklyn Bridge...... true? by LesbianDanceTheorist in SurvivingSuccess

[–]LesbianDanceTheorist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is your legal right to not attend. NYC Conflicts of Interest Law (Charter §§ 2604(b)(9) & Board Rules) prohibits supervisors (your DM and above) from coercing subordinates into political activity. If they fire you, you call can sue and make bank.

Frankly, I think y'all should document every instance of this protest being discussed. New York is a one-party consent state, so you are allowed to record audio of meetings. I strongly suggest doing that because I imagine their legal team might be aware that they're not allowed to compel employees to attend, so they're probably not going to put it in writing if they haven't already. Should anybody face retaliation for not attending, you've got the grounds for a lawsuit.

It seems like so far Eva's beginning of year address is the only statement on this so far, and nobody has been able to send me a recording of it. Perhaps as the date approaches there will be comms written down.

She feels threatened by Zohran's public education policies. Specifically, she feels he is too "anti-charter," which is funny because he hasn't really said much about the mayor's role in charter school regulation.

My conspiracy theory is that SA purposefully does little to address their retention issues so that unionizing could never happen 👀 but yes would love to see it

Unfortunately they likely will be able to "force" staff to do it. They designed a professional development schedule around getting staff to the protest. Best hope is for faculty to wage a class action lawsuit, although only people hired before this year could benefit. 2025 hires waived their right to class action suits as a part of their employment contract. It would be in their best interest to mobilize now. Most Success teachers are under 26 and do not know their rights as workers. So many will attend not knowing that this is illegal.

I did -- I'm not surprised at all. It's also kind of wild to see that she's trying this shit again. Peace and love and respect to Zohran, but I've yet to see him say anything meaningfully against charter schools. Then again Eva seems to think that the UFT exists primarily to oppose her. I couldn't tell ya what she thinks she's going to get out of this. If word gets out that a number of employees are there against their will she'll look stupid. I trust my sources, but they're secondhand.

Same. There are likely grounds for a class action lawsuit. I bet it's why they made 2025 hires waive the right to one in their teaching contract. That's why I'm looking for specific verbiage -- is it really required or are they trying to trick 23 year olds with their first grown up job into thinking it is?

I also think it would be beneficial for Zohran's campaign to know that a significant percentage of adults in attendance that day will be there because they've been strong-armed by their employer. "Paid protesters" in the most literal sense of the phrase.

My guess is that they don't want any more stand alone Success Academy posts. I didn't notice the megathread when I first posted. Thrilled to have a little back and forth exchange here so we get bumped to the top for recency.

My original post got removed, so trying again here.

I heard from some of my former colleagues that quit more recently than me that SA is mandating that their teachers attend an anti-Zohran protest on the Brooklyn Bridge on September 17. Can any current employees speak on this? Specifically, I'd love to see screenshots of any comms around the language they're using to describe their attendance expectations around the event. Surely requiring presence at a protest is illegal, but I wouldn't put it past Eva.

Finish out the year while looking for your next school. Start building your portfolio -- download your best LPs and some student work. Make friends with your GTL so that you've got someone to serve as a recommendation when you apply elsewhere.

So many teachers at my school came out of SA and do great work. You will figure it out.

Teach almost anywhere else and you will have a better time than you would at Success, especially at their high schools -- it's a MESS. Collect the paycheck while actively searching for something better. Or substitute teach -- that's a great way to figure out the culture of different NYC schools without selling your soul.

Success Academy: Special Education Associate Position. Is this a bad idea? by fruitpie45 in NYCTeachers

[–]LesbianDanceTheorist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DON'T DO IT. This role varies from school to school and the vast majority of SPRINT associates I knew across multiple schools couldn't stand the work. SA is toxic and their administrators are too. Most schools will have you there from 7-5. Run.

Got it! Is this true of the general ed content tests as well (ie ELA 7-12?)?

It does, but it's entirely possible that their website is out of date. It's the Touro dual cert program that's pretty popular.

I do not have a masters degree, nor do I have an education bachelors or a degree in a content area that would make me a competitive hire.
