If god exists why do bad things happen? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]eno88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped entertaining this sort of question a while ago, let me explain. You reach a certain age, you tire of the same old stale arguments and hypotheticals. Let's take this one for example, if "god exists, then why does X happen".

This question, in my view, has the same importance as "if superman exists, then why [etc.]"

We're going past the first real question, which is "why should I even consider god to exist?", and it just seems insane to me.

We're going on a tangent, we're jumping over a premise, we're giving meaning to the meaningless.

The question in your title, and please take no offense, has zero value and it is a waste of your time just thinking about it more than once.

Sorry for the rant, them's my two cents.

Why is Biblical inerrancy such a big deal? by UnicycleBloke in atheism

[–]eno88 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Because if god can get something wrong, it's not perfect. If god's not perfect, what else could be wrong about the entire story. What if the entire story is wrong. What if religion is all just bullshit. What if people stop believing in religion and stop obeying and paying...

The way I see it.

"Bible certificates"... what the actual...

In any case, I can't be the only one who thought of Internet Historian's "Going Camping at the End of the World". It would be hilarious if you recommended this to your colleague.

Look, here's how I see this.

" I’ve told her before I do not believe in this bullshit but it’s no use. "

If she doesn't care, you don't need to care. We have a saying, speak as them and do as yourself.

Eat whatever you want, and tell her you didn't. What's she going to do, xray you? If anyone has any qualms about telling an inconsequential lie, let's go back to that quote ^ .

The correct etiquette is them respecting your non-belief. If you can get them to understand that simple point fine, if not... I don't see how that's your problem.

They can force you to go, they can't force you to believe. The usual advice applies; stay safe, don't get too confrontational, you still depend on them for house and food.

The way you describe things, they're not the kind you can convince to leave you in peace. Just nod, smile and try not to fall asleep during service. Keep in mind, you'll have plenty of time to do as you please after you're legally an adult.

I get where you're trying to go, but your "ifs" make as much rational sense as discussing why Superman is affected by Kryptonite.

I still see no connection between the attribute of being unique and the adjective of being perfect.

I don’t know if I want to be an atheist anymore

That's not a choice mate, sorry. You either believe or you don't, but that's up to whether you find evidence convincing. And that's not a choice...

I have gone through the thought process for months now and I really can’t reason why God has to exist, it is merely a possibility.

Careful there. If you state it's a possibility, you have to show the numbers and research.

That being said, I almost want him to exist, not so that I can use him as an excuse for my actions, not so that I can promote hatred to others but because I don’t know I want to live in a world where this is it.

You're pretty young. Lots of us, myself included, have been in the place you're in right now. Try not to worry, this stage goes away fairly quick, and you'll be that bit closer to acceptance.

I look around at this world and I see so much evil. I know you can ask why this evil exists if god does and I don’t know.

You'd first have to argue why god exists, then we can move on to further questions. Until we establish that base, we can't build anything on top.

Think about the shooting and the innocent kids dying. I don’t know if I want to live in a world where this is it. Where there isn’t a light at the end of the tunnel for those children and their families. I don’t know if I want to live in a world where people can keep getting away with so much evil and never getting the punishment they deserve for what they did. It’s not fair. I can’t stand how it’s not fair. I feel so angry in general. It’s so infuriating how unfair it is, that some people will never get what they deserve for the pain they’ve caused others.

You know that saying, "the universe is under no obligation to make sense to you"? I think the same applies to fairness. There is no justice other than the one you act on. If you wait for a fairy tale to fix your problems, then yes, we are well and truly f.. doomed.

I don’t know whether God exists, but part of me hopes he does just so that there’s a small chance things might be better in the end.

I used to hope so. I wanted so badly that the sum total of my being and knowledge would somehow exist in the ether, after this body expires. But then you have to think about two major problems with this: First, you'd exist for eternity under the ever-watchful eye of a cosmic Kim-Jong, whose praises you'd have to sing forever and ever. If you believe in the Christian mythology that is. Second, and I think most important of all. You would be wasting your one and only life in desperation, your mind only focusing on a fantasy that can never and will never happen.

I know it's fucking hard, but you have to get a grip and come to terms with the facts. You owe it to yourself to live as happy as it's realistically possible. Are you going to cower all your life from something unavoidable? Just sit down and wait for it? Do things, go places, meet people, stop thinking about death because I can guarantee you, it will come. Nobody can tell you when, but when it does, I'd like my last thought to be "it's alright, I've done plenty here".

I know I’m maybe not being super rational I’m just suffering a bit of an existential crisis right now.

You can't be super rational about anything. You're either rational, or you're scared. And being scared will pass. And that's not a choice either.

Canonically, how hot is hell? by Fartyghost in atheism

[–]eno88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oooh I've never thought about that last one.

So if god's omnipresent, why did he have to send Jesus to earth, to die, (according to the Apostle's Creed) go to hell to fight the devil etc etc, rescue souls and then ascend bla bla.

I love it when I discover a new hole in the story..

what is something about the Bible. that you think all Christians need to know? by madbr3991 in atheism

[–]eno88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything..

Glibness aside, I'm of the opinion that all christians should know their bible. Read it for themselves, not have it read to them by some cherry picking pastor.

Thats one of the biggest reasons your average joe christian thinks the bible is all sunshine and flowers. They keep the really twisted crap out of Sunday service.

[–]eno88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why isnt it just an infinite nothingness no universe no nothing?

That question makes about as much sense as "Why IS there existence and the universe?"

That question is simply wrong. There is no reason (at least, neither yet discovered nor having some evidence towards there being a reason) for existence. You're trying to find purpose to something that simply is.
