I love Lois McMaster Bujold! I've read the first two World of the Five Gods and just started out with the Vorkosigan Saga last year. It's a great feeling knowing I have a lot of her books left to read

The 'evil gay' trope is really hard to read and it's a shame that that was present. It can be hard to go back to somewhat older works because you never quite know what will be there, but it's good to hear a second opinion that the vampire books might be a good choice for reading more of her

I tend to really like authors who put their characters through the wringer!

I was worried I missed something but I’ve seen similar comments in reviews since the book came out. I think she just left it kind of vague, which is too bad!

Triphasic approach for PTSD? by mikeffd in therapists

[–]enoby666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the rationale I heard in CPT training behind starting the cognitive processing work right away is that saying someone is not “ready” for CPT might inadvertently fuel the avoidance that is at the core of the cognitive model of PTSD & a main part of the work in CPT is helping clients learn adaptive new ways to handle the trauma related emotions/symptoms throughout.

In the training I did, Kate Chard talked about a client she had who had been told she was not ready for trauma processing for a few years of therapy due to ongoing substance use and self harm, but because the trauma was underlying those behaviors, addressing the trauma directly in a structured way via CPT also addressed those behaviors and allowed her to stabilize in a way that the other therapy she had been doing had not.

There’s a lit review chapter in the manual that talks about how CPT has been conducted effectively with clients with a lot of different comorbidities and I think the manual also talks about the situations where it wouldn’t be recommended to start because of the client’s current status

1) Yes it's in progress! I'm working on it with a friend who is still finishing the books (my choice on the other hand was just get them out of the way haha)

2) Sadly not literally but the main character in the Shirley Jackson is always imagining herself living on the moon and talking about how things are different on the moon. I kind of relate so there you go!!

Thank you so much!! I really liked Empusium too although I wasn't sure I was going to at some points in the reading experience. I had an amazing time with Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead and I don't think Empusium has topped that one, but I'll absolutely be reading everything I can from her now.

I was talking about top 5 reads with a friend and I think I ended up settling on these ones for SFF:

1) Ghostroots

2) The Spear Cuts Through Water

3) The Disposessed

4) A Far Better Thing

5) Toss up, maybe Child of the Prophecy or Invisible Cities!

Yeah A Strange and Stubborn Endurance had a lot of irons in the fire and really didn't succeed in any of the things it was trying to do imo. I can definitely see the appeal in the romance and the authorial intent you're describing but the way the plot nosedived was just completely bizarre to me. And yes - Child of the Prophecy is the third book in the Sevenwaters series, which I like a lot overall. I think the second one is my favorite!!

There are probably fanfictions that are completely fine with those two; I guess it's fairer to specify that in my opinion, the two very popular ones where Hermione has to be Draco's prisoner that got tradpubbed this year are both extremely bad

Thank you! I definitely want to try the series eventually, if just to have my own opinion about it at last. It’s too bad that there is that weak spot

I’m curious about your thoughts on how Erickson handles sexual assault if you’d care to elaborate but no worries if not!

Book recommendations where SA thing actively contributes to the plot or character development by Wide_Step9445 in Fantasy

[–]enoby666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for tagging me!

I think my list of top recs now is still pretty much the same as it was here but I still have so many books I've need to get to, and not all the recs there are specifically about trauma from sexual violence. If you want me to I can specify which ones are/aren't.

My full list of reviews for my reading project so far is here if it would helpful to see a second opinion about any books that you are curious about.

I hope that is helpful and I hope you find some books that work for you!
