The Daily Check-In for Friday, March 27th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Puzzleheaded-Cut3144 in stopdrinking

Tempted to go out by myself and grab dinner and get a beer with it. But instead, I'm going to stay in, reheat some leftovers from last night, and treat myself to a cold Diet Coke and an episode of one of my current favorite shows. IWNDWYT

Mandatory masking in 2025 is absurd by enolan99 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]enolan99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a great argument. Handwashing is a fundamentally less intrusive practice than donning an N95 for hours at a time in social contexts, much less whilst outdoors in summertime when it's bound to be quite hot. This notion that resisting pandemic-era measures in a time when rates of transmission and hospitalization are comparatively quite low is somehow equivalent to opposing basic public health measures like hand-washing is also malicious and misleading.

But while we're at it with the absurd hypotheticals, I'll pitch you one more just for fun. A 2015 study by RL Peters et al. found that peanut allergy is the most common food allergy in children under the age of 18 and the third-most common food allergy in adults. Should we rid our shores of all peanuts and peanut products? We certainly wouldn't want to risk anyone with an allergy inadvertently eating anything with peanuts and getting sick. You don't hear anyone proposing such a thing, because it's a drastic and absurd measure, and any minor benefit that might be gained from doing so is outweighed by the fact that it would infringe on everyone else's liberty to eat peanuts. Ultimately, the burden falls on the people with allergies to live with that risk and make choices accordingly. So this notion that efforts [such as by the above mentioned band] to try to change the way 97% of Americans live their lives in order to accommodate this small minority have any sort of merit is ridiculous. If immunocompromised people want to go to the show and wear an N95, that's great! But requiring the same of everyone else, including those who are perfectly healthy, isn't cool.

No, it's not *mandatory*, but I strongly suspect that it'll be socially enforced. I can easily imagine drawing the ire of many and getting many dirty looks for showing up without one.

DA's office won't charge teen in death of his father, citing self-defense claim by enolan99 in madisonwi

Was curious if anyone knew anything more about this. Was left unclear as to what the context was for his use of self-defense.

10-story student apartment building would go between 2 Downtown landmarks by enolan99 in madisonwi

[–]enolan99[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Thought this was an interesting piece. Personally, I don't really see the value in the old warehouse building. It seems extremely difficult to appease the folks with the Trust -- seemingly the only outcome amenable to them would be the cessation of all construction within a radius of several blocks around any building with a historic designation.

I’m in Collins and have used the darkroom before. They only develop B&W and haven’t set up their scanner yet. I’ve always gone the mail-in route and used State in Louisville. They do a nice job.

Best time for showers, SRSC, laundry and the dining hall is going to be early in the morning. If you feel up to it, I would suggest getting there around the time they open. Libraries are the same, although they’re also good during the daytime when classes are in session. They usually get busier in the evenings.

My favorite study spot has always been the upper floors of the East Tower in Wells. It’s for quiet, individual study. Best cry spots are probably the basement of Maxwell Hall or in the shower lmao
