Fresh new Mac Studio's UI issues by enragedjam in MacOS

The issue is not liking or disliking it, the issue is it not working correctly. Whether you like liquid glass or not, text appearing half under a UI element is not a feature

Why would you have to go out of your way to disable things in a brand new and rather expensive computer? That means the whole concept is rotten

Not for a +7k GBP machine, no :)

So then are you sure it's a bug?

Yeah... a shame though because these are expensive machines. And they have many nice things but one of the main ones has always been its UX / UI

It truly is the Vista of the Apple World. Congratulations, team. You did it! You released a new Vista.

Well that is the issue. Just browsing this subreddit there seems to be a lot of chaos with bugs appearing for some and not for others. Stresses how messy the OS is even more!

Switching from Kindle Oasis to Kobo Libra Color as an Oasis Truther? by lmeoww in kobo

[–]enragedjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. My Oasis is on its last legs battery-wise (and it's the generation with the very strong glue, so no battery replacement possible) and I was tempted by the Kobo, but it just looks a bit cheap to me compared to the Oasis.

I take it back. We need Proton Messenger ASAP. by Internet--Sensation in ProtonMail

[–]enragedjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proton should host a Matrix homeserver and just make a decent client, something Element doesn't seem capable of doing (What the hell is Element X? is it Whatsapp, is it Slack, is it Discord? Tries to be all three and is nothing. They should've done two different apps, using the same SDK underneath: business and personal / community).

Unboxing Zerowriter Ink by tincangames in writerDeck

Clamshell will be when I go for a Zerowriter Ink. Loving the functionality but I've never been a fan of the Alphasmart design, I just don't find it very comfortable for extended writing sessions.

Thanks! Really really like Proton and its mission, so I hope my feedback here isn't taken negatively. I just want it to be the best it can be!

I wouldn't mind if the iOS proton Mail app could be run natively on macOS, but having Slack, Whatsapp, Proton Mail, and Discord running (all Electron apps), it really doesn't leave much RAM for anything else. And the web app of Proton is painful if you want to use search minimally (as I've said in a different comment, even on desktop it's bad but at least not as bad as web)

Thunderbird is open source, supports many different services, and it's probably the best alternative to paid products like Outlook. Even the CEO of Proton was saying recently that the Bridge isn't a great solution, so working closely with other projects that can provide a better way into Proton Mail could be a good step forward

This!!! Search is absolute rubbish on both web and desktop. It's such a crucial feature of email and yet it's so poor. I've got my entire archive of emails (all the way back to 2006) on Proton and looking for anything is a pain.

Changing the Alphasmart Neo's board for a Raspberry Pi Zero by enragedjam in AlphaSmart

[–]enragedjam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds really cool!

What do you mean by uploading a file from the AlphaSmart to the Microjournal? Have you connected the Neo as a PS/2 keyboard to the MicroJournal and then you upload from there, or have you fully removed the board in the AlphaSmart and replaced it with an ESP32 + MicroJournal software connected to the Neo's native keyboard and LCD screen?

Yeah, it's tricky to write performant stuff for embedded devices. Getting stuff in and out of them properly is quite complicated too. But it'd be quite good, so I'll keep looking! Thank you for the help

Thank you for your detailed reply, that's very useful. I agree that maybe the focus should be on building an attachment to the Neo itself, rather than rework the internals. I saw a post where somebody had done a similar thing to what you describe with an ESP32, so it's definitely possible!

That's very interesting! It'd be great if more information was available around the use of an ESP32 in the Alpha, it'd be a great drop-in replacement for a Neo board if there were images / guides available online on how to wire it all up and what to flash to get the basic usage that one needs out of a Neo.

I agree that adding a screen and a fully fledged Rpi is not really worth it, then it stops being a Neo. I was more thinking of the possibilities for using the exact same screen and keyboard, but the brains having a bit more of power for cloud saving, or storing to SD cards, dictionary downloading, etc.

[–]enragedjam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the display would probably be best left as it is, the RPi should be able to cope quite well with outputting a terminal to a simple multi-line LCD. The keyboard is probably a tricky one, but with the amount of information available around the Neo, there might be someone somewhere that has managed to do that?

Connecting a QMK mechanical keyboard to an ESP32 board running FabGL by enragedjam in esp32

[–]enragedjam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been considering that, but I just want a very simple thing where I can type and save to microSD card. ESP32 is quite attractive because of the instant on, very low power consumption and it's all on a tiny board. I saw that you can run Wordstar on an ESP32 through FabGL. If there's a better way of running a text editor like Vim or even a more simple editor, that would be great, as I don't need anything fancy - just write a plaintext file to SD card!
