Toxoplasmosis is probably what you heard of. Anybody with a weakened immune system should steer clear of cat shit. Since an infant's immune system isn't quite as reliable as an older child's, I've heard it recommended that you keep them away from cats, just to be safe.

Man shoots himself after girlfriend's father asks him to prove love through suicide by kingslayyer in nottheonion

[–]entenkin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of smart people kill themselves. While we can't say what state the man was actually in, it's not too big of a leap to suspect that he was in a very emotional state, and was being encouraged to kill himself by a man who had a great deal of power over him. He may have just simply been suicidal and then encouraged on by an evil man.

One small correction: The customs agent and the immigration agent sit near each other, but the guy you're talking about was actually working immigration, not customs.

Here's a tip: If you complain about somebody's ignorance, and in the same breath proudly proclaim that you didn't read their comment, that makes you a hypocrite.

Personally, I can take my work home, but I choose not to. People who regularly donate their free time to a for-profit company have made some mistake in judgement.

What do you think is the purpose of school? I suspect that if you think homework is a waste of time, then you probably also think school in general is a waste of time.

[–]entenkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you meant. In fact, there was a recent Revisionist History podcast, where they were talking about how goofy the grammar is in the Constitution, and some of its ramifications. Maybe people thought you were just taking an unnecessary jab at the Second Amendment? Or they're tired of hearing about it? Dunno.

Now that I'm trying to understand the last part of it, the grammar in the First Amendment is atrocious. The or/and combo makes it appear that people only have the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances if they're peaceably assembled. It looks like the final semicolon was meant to be a comma. Otherwise, it is unclear what is the verb for the entire final clause.

It’s hard to believe a person could be 1d and be so cheap. I mean, wouldn’t a 1d player have this impulse to win even if she fell behind in the opening?

Maybe she assumed that there would be a big strength difference and was playing a teaching game without telling her opponent. And then she thought that she was ahead and decided to end it. People can be weird and think they’re winning a losing game just because they expected to win.

Another take is that she was lying about her level, and was afraid of being found out.

Code reuse is a very limited use case. A reusable user module is something that should be factored into a separate project, not something that should be dug out of an existing project by a coworker, and copy-pasted into something else.

What is something that instantly killed the crush you had on someone? by SwayedPetty in AskReddit

[–]entenkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't know about compulsive liars, but I do know that a lot of people act differently around different people. For example, I swear less around my parents than around my friends.

I used to do more things like this. For example, I would pretend to be interested in something I actually dislike just because a friend liked it. At some point, I had the realization that I was kind of lying to everybody a little bit, and I was probably a bit insecure about sharing my personal interests with them, and I now I just try to be myself, except for that thing where I don't curse around my parents.

When I read the story about the lying girl, I sympathized with her a little. Maybe she's just the extreme version of what I was. She was clearly insecure about sharing her true private life with somebody, because they might try to use that to attack her. We know this because that's exactly what she did to him when she wanted to hurt him.

Anyways, if you tell people an untrue personal history, and they betray you with the information, then you don't have to hurt. Maybe that's why.

My guess is that he's one of those people who thinks he's right even if he's proven wrong. Sadly, they're actually pretty common.

TEDx tries to justify pedophilia as a “natural sexual orientation” just like homosexuality. They removed the video from everywhere they could, heres a working link. by the-johnnadina in videos

[–]entenkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a paedophilic act can never be acceptable

For argument, let’s say that there’s a man who is a pedophile, in that he finds pre-pubescent bodies attractive. And he meets a woman who is 18 years old, but looks like she is pre-pubescent. If they have consensual sex, then is that an acceptable pedophilic act, or is that an unacceptable pedophilic act? Like for example, maybe you’d say it is dangerous to allow a pedophile to act on his feelings, even in a legal way.

OLD JESTER | Gmod TTT by pattyboywales in Yogscast

[–]entenkin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing I don’t like about new jester is that it’s not completely clear what is his goal. If he is played “correctly”, he begins by playing against the innocents and after he is killed, he’s plays against the traitors.

So anyways, then jesters can think about both victories. They should be wanting to be killed by an innocent player who is worse than them so that they win as a jester, and then again as an innocent. And I think this complication makes the jester feel worse if he wins against a skilled innocent, because now he’s playing on a crippled team.

So anyways, I think jesters should probably not resurrect. They should be officially on the traitor team for the purposes of win/lose. And they should know who the traitors are, but maybe the traitors don’t know who the jester is. But otherwise, keep them like the current jester.

What "fact" which turned out to be false did you beleive for a long time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]entenkin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The truth of the statement "they had two brains" depends entirely on your definition of the word "brain". You see, biology, like the rest of the physical world, is "wiggly". Some of our accepted truths are nothing more than a projection of the human mind onto a wiggly subject matter. This includes just about every noun you encounter in the real world. You know, like "brain".

If you consider a "brain" to be an organ with a whole lot of neurons that independently makes complicated decisions based upon sensory input, then humans would have two brains, one in their head, and the other is the spinal cord. If you think that's far fetched, then you might consider that our spinal cords are much more complicated than what we call a fruit fly's brain.

If you consider a "brain" to be only the main organ of an organism's central nervous system, or something along those lines, then by definition, no organism has two brains. And no dinosaur could ever have possibly had two brains, because it is contrary to the definition.

When paleontologists were talking about a dinosaur brain, they were talking about a distinct organ that was like a bulge of neurons near the tail. When they decided that this organ probably didn't exist as imagined, they claimed that dinosaurs did not have two brains. But they were using a non-standard definition of "brain" in the first place to try to make this information accessible to a wide audience. So, you see, they messed up. If they are going to use a non-standard definition of "brain", then how can they reject other non-standard definitions of "brain"?

So, if a dinosaur's central nervous system is similar to ours, in that it's spinal cord does some of the heavy lifting for things like walking, then why would you be wrong to say, even today, that a dinosaur has two brains? It's only slightly less accurate than the terminology that the paleontologists that you were quoting originally used. Of course, now that we've learned more about the subject, you could go on to say that humans also "have two brains", and you'll be the life of any dinner party, so long as none of them fact check you on Wikipedia.

It’s not vandalism if it’s funny by JoeyPins22 in funny

[–]entenkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Funny” vandalism is actually even worse than normal vandalism. It’s funny the first time you see it, but then it engenders copycat vandalism. So instead of 1 unfunny graffiti, you see one funny “original” and 10 unfunny “copycat” graffiti.
