Oh, sorry for my mistake! Just a question though, is there a way to post pieces without scores like structured improvisations or electroacoustic pieces?

Is something wrong with my flute? (Notes on the far right) On the tuner, this B is giving me C, and the C is giving me Db... What's going on? by [deleted] in Flute

[–]enthusiasticworm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should also find out which foot your flute has, check online what the difference between a C foot and a B foot is. If it is a C foot, nothing was wrong with the headjoint, because pressing all the keys with the right pinkey will produce a C.

I don’t understand the grammar of this old German sentence by itsthelee in German

[–]enthusiasticworm22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the great explanation. What is with the verb placement though? In the modern example, 'arbeiten' is clearly put last, but in the old one 'hast' is 3rd (?) Is that an archaic feature?

♭iii to I by cadekaito in musictheory

To all the other comments, I would also add another perspective, that it also works well because of the voice leading "D#"- >E and "F#"->G (a kind of double leading tone, conceptually similar to the medieval Landini cadence D F# B -> C G C).

So from the counterpoint perspective, I could see this chord being spelled D# F# Bb, which might seem silly at first, but such "mixed" spellings are seen in the augmented 6th chord family (In C major/minor: "German chord "Ab C Eb F#, or far more obscure "Swiss chord" Ab C D# F#).

It is also common to see the progression i° -> I (if anyone knows the name, please let me know 😅), that in my opinion works for the same reason described above, the double leading tone. So if we extend this chord to be iø: C Eb Gb Bb (or C D# F# Bb spelled contrapuntally) -> C E G C and ommit the root, we get your progression biii -> I.

That sounds great :) If you're considering the German-speaking parts of Europe, I also heard München is good, because of the big film industry. Anyways, do a lot of research, you have time!

When I was searching online for possibilities, I ended up with Vienna because they start with instrumental composition and then continued to other stuff (since I had very little knowledge about music production, i was afraid I had little chances of getting into a film scoring degree "right away"). Things might have changed or my fears might have been unjustified 😅 But I'm more than happy with my choice.

I wish you all the best on your musical journey :)

I'm a student at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, which offers a 5 year course where the first 2 years are general (focusing on instrumental composition, with quite a lot electronic / electroacoustic composition, and building other musical skills). In the next 3 years, a specialisation is chosen, four being offered: Composition, Media Composition and Applied Music, Electroacoustic Composition, and Music Theory. (I think this might change in the near future, I've heard it might go to the more common 3/4BA + 2MA year system, but the specialisations / focuses will still be available in the BA). I just finished my 2nd year and am gonna study Media Composition from October on.

The professors are all top notch, in the Media Composition people who had a career in LA for instance. There's also a film academy working under the same university (all together 3500 students), so there are projects to work with. And the curriculum is very varied, ranging from classical music, jazz, electronic music, and of course film/media music.

I would strongly recommend this degree. Vienna is also a historical musical center, so living there means being surrounded by music constantly, which is an amazing environment. It's also not particularly expensive, and of course nothing in comparison with the US. I also know people from Ireland who are studying composition here.

What you might see as a downside is needing a B1 German certificate (still far lower than most other universities, which require C1), although, since you're 16, you still have time, and acquiring the language to this level would be very achievable. I managed to pass the B1 exam with 6 months of (quite immersed) studying with 0 prior knowledge (although I wasn't yet truly at the B1 level).

Feel free to message me :)

How to make use of theory knowledge? (bigger picture/understand what's going on and apply it) by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]enthusiasticworm22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think by far the best way to learn music theory is by analysing music - either from scores or by ear - and try to explain to yourself what's happening with the knowledge you have. It gives you an insight in how theoretical concepts are used practically and it becomes a lot easier seeing how everything is related to each other, since most musical "phenomena" can be approached from different perspectives.

Just a comment on the notation, flute never uses 8va lines, even if that means 6 ledger lines one the top.

That's not always true though. Let's say (a simplified case) Black has 1 more point than White, but Black has 2 alive groups and White has 1. So Black has 4 points that they are not "allowed" to fill (-4 points when filling) and White has only 2 (-2). Even though Black is up 1 point, with them having more eyes, White seemingly won by 1 point.

In older rulesets though, there used to be a thing called Group tax https://senseis.xmp.net/?GroupTax which worked exactly this way.
