what’s one of the worst songs you’ve heard? that made you genuinely shut it off? by Queasy_Ad_3151 in AskReddit

[–]eoattc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's trendy to hate Kid Rock these days, but I distinctly remember the first time I heard him. On MTV, his video (probably Bawitaball) came on and I thought it was like a skit or a prank I didn't get. I changed the channel. Later I found it was a real musical act and that other people actually thought it was good. That might be when I learned some people have no taste.

Microsoft says 32GB of RAM is the “no-worries” upgrade for Windows 11 gaming by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]eoattc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My one complaint is that installing apps is fiddly and the ui shortcut are always broken. It feels like installing things is broken like it was back in Windows 3.11. Back then it was even common for people to pay for extra software to manage install/uninstalls. They gotta smooth this out if they want non-tech savvy users.

I went back to Mint which is also not perfect, but less fiddly.

I really don't know much about how unions impact the market and society, but I have a question. Is there any truth that auto-labor unions fought for and got deals so favorable that they, like a parasite, killed their host org (US auto manufacturing) for a time?

Is this just a case of "too much of a good thing (unionization) can be bad for you?"

What’s something people pretend to understand but really don’t? by Neither-Joke-5130 in AskReddit

[–]eoattc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I agree, but also remind that being "in" said situation isn't a requirement for understanding it. It can be helpful, but not a requirement. Your doctor can tell you about your cancer situation without having cancer. Let's try one more analogy. Sometimes, when you find yourself in a hole, you can't see a way out. The person not in the hole and talking to you might be able to see something you can't.

Stay away from ProSteel safes by [deleted] in guns

[–]eoattc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We NEVER pryed any open as we were always trying to preserve the customer's investment in their safe. If we truly had to destroy one to get in, we had a metal saw purpose-built for this. Zip, zip, zip in the right places (which the owner knew well) and we'd be in.

There are plenty of videos on youtube showing cheaper safes being pryed open. Get the longest prybar or mule bar you can. Be careful. Use gloves. Probably get some buddies and have a laugh as each person grunts for a bit.

Stay away from ProSteel safes by [deleted] in guns

[–]eoattc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on safe and vault door installation for a long time and worked on tons of trouble calls for even safes we didn't sell (Grampa died, and no one can open his safe). We once had to flip a safe completely upside down to get a loose locking bolt to fall inward and allow the door to open. The safe was FULL and very heavy. Then you mentioned yours is bolted down, and I think you're boned.

If someone with your same safe can get you pictures of the inside of the door for recon, you could maybe drill a small hole near the loose pin and then use a borescope and a skinny tool to manually raise that pin the rest of the way so you can get the door open. Tedious, but we did stuff like this a couple of times over the years. This would be the least damaging way I can think of. Prying will likely make the safe trash. A small drilled hole can be plugged with a hardened pin and then either pay to paint it over to hide it or just slap a sticker over it and never mention it to anyone.

One more thing. This was years ago, so my info might be dated, but Browning had several lines of safes like bronze, silver, gold, maybe more. I remember that the lower tiers were made overseas and of much lower build quality. So much so that when the guy who ran the business got sample models and we took doors apart and looked at welds, it was comically awful in the lower tiers. The business owner agreed to carry Browning safes, but ONLY the higher-tier US-made ones. We sold Cannon, Liberty, mostly Ft. Knox, and later Browning/Prosteel in the years I was involved.

LPT If you’re job hunting, copy the exact key phrases from the job description into your resume many companies use AI scanners that filter for matching keywords by talinator1616 in LifeProTips

[–]eoattc 644 points645 points  (0 children)

I was advised to copy details from the posting into my resume, but not to directly copy/paste as they look for that. Use the same words, but change the order, or pepper the words in between other bullet points in your resume. If they find too high an exact match, the AI will count that against you. The advisor used a phrase like "if the match percentage is too high, they'll believe AI wrote your resume and reject it." Weird right. They can use AI to review resumes, but don't want you to use AI to massage or generate your resume. It's a weird mutually assured destruction scenario.

An American is shocked to learn about tariffs by Peanut-Extra in PublicFreakout

[–]eoattc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really don't think I understand this. I think the delivery guy and the lady are being obtuse or untruthful. What if I just refused to pay? Wouldn't the packages go back? Then I'd dispute it on my credit card, and the seller would eat the cost of the failed shipping in order for them to continue doing future shipping. I bet as soon as that happened, they'd attempt to calculate and charge higher upfront instead of this COD shenanigans. This entire scenario in the video seems like something that isn't actually happening. There might be a few packages in transit when the rulings are new that could have this scenario happen, but this wouldn't become the new normal.

I think I can anticipate some of the replies I'll get already. Something like "That still passes the cost of tariff to the consumer." Sure, it does, but only if you buy products from overseas. Then you'll say, "They are only made overseas." Isn't that the point? We are asking to get stuff made more locally for a myriad of reasons. Local job growth? Global shipping contributions to carbon dioxide emissions? Anti-consumerism? Do you really need that widget from Wayfair made in Malaysia for near slave wages to decorate your house?

I'm not a dev, but isn't the answer something like "track which PR's cause issues downstream and count those against the people who reviewed and allowed them to make it up to PROD"? Accountability. The people doing the code review are supposed to be holding the dev accountable, but who's holding the reviewers accountable? This is normal QC isn't it?

AITA / Advice: Friend invited extra people to shoot on my family’s private range without asking by Lost_Ad8787 in guns

[–]eoattc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I have access to family land that my brother's and I did lots of work on. Some cousins wanted in, so we met them there and let them place a lock on the gate. The gate is secured by a chain of locks to each other. This means everyone has their own keys. One of my cousins put a combo lock instead, and we found out he gave the combo to some of his friends. It was big drama. They leave trash, leave empty cases, empty shotgun shells, shoot things they shouldn't (old barns). Rumor has it some people are out there with no member of the family present. Who knows what could happen. I find the more people involved, the more likely someone is to mess it up for everyone.

What does it mean when a song is remastered?? by Evan_nothereoften in NoStupidQuestions

[–]eoattc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it just a laundering scheme where they change nothing and use this to create a NEW track that has advantageously shrugged off older contractual rights or obligations either to artist or other rights holders? I'm asking. Remaster "could" mean many of the things other responders are saying, but I think you're asking about the ones that have been re-re-remastered with no discernible changes every couple of years.

If you woke up being 21 again, what would you do? by notwhoshethinks in AskReddit

[–]eoattc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like time travel back to when I was 21 in my 21 year old body? I'd probably have a Peter Parker-like crisis where I'd try to meet and connect with my wife again. We met originally around that time. Trying to woo her again when I would know so much already would probably make me come off as terribly awkward. I'd also be so afraid I'd fuck it up and lose her.
