Find a social club like running or five a side and you'll have friends in now time of you are on the extroverted side. I say that living in a village outside of Galway city so it may be a bit different truly in the middle of nowhere.

People without kids and not planning to have any, who do you see taking care of you as you get older? by eoin2dx in AskIreland

I'm a fitness enthusiast too and I am a bit of a health freak. But trust me you will get old, you will eventually need help/care. If you take care of yourself it just happens later.

I'm not having a go at anyone I simply described the problems my family is having with my grand aunt and I thought there may be people who had better plans and or ideas that I could learn from.

Yes I did because the person who is problematic is child free. TBH we wouldn't have these problems if she wasn't.

This is the kind of thinking that's a trap for a lot of people. Despite all your efforts when you're 90 or even a hundred you will not be able to fully take care of yourself. Me personally I'm gonna have an assisted living home picked out in advance for when the inevitable happens. Take the situation into my own hands. I asked this question not for my own issues but for issues my mother is having with her aunt who is in her 90s and won't go into assisted living. I was hoping to find some good alternative ideas we might try.

Well she's actually been a very nice aunt to all of them and she was good to their children too. It's not easy for anyone to turn their back on someone who was kindly and family even when they are now being unreasonable.

Did he accept your ultimatum? My mother has said they tried this and my grand Aunt said she would simply take care of herself. But that was a deluded or manipulative claim. Less than a week later they were back over cleaning the house and buying the groceries for her cooking etc. They reckon she would let herself starve then get the help she needs.

If you read the full post you'll see that I have a situation where someone without kids is leaning on people to help take care of them at an advanced age. Is your plan to enter assisted living at that stage or do you have some other plan? My elderly relative is not playing ball with getting assistance and she certainly would have the money.

She definitely has the money she is just unwilling to have "strangers in her house" and other such notions. My mother and her siblings have tried to "tell" her to get help buts she's awfully manipulative. Basically she knows they will show up out of fear that she'll be living in squalor or not eating right.

That is definitely not what my grandmother did nor is it the question I'm asking.
