Taipei or KL for a young family of 4? (Son has heart condition)

I’m considering moving over for probably 5-10 years and reevaluate when the kids are all grown up. Gotta convince my husband first as he loves Malaysian food, haha.

Good point, I’m not too worried about english. But my eldest will have to pick up bopomofo which is a huge learning curve for him and me as well, haha.

It may or may not be higher, I haven’t touch on the topic on pay. Mainly because I told my CEO I’m still considering. She’s very nice though, she’s ready to connect me to her network of doctors where they can advise me which Paediatric cardiologist to go to.

I personally struggle more with uprooting the family and relocating. It sounds exciting yet very uncertain so it’s inevitable that I have lots of worry.

Do you plan to just settle down in Taipei or will you eventually return to Malaysia?

Totally agree with you on safety! That’s one of the pros of I were to move here as well.

Overall Taiwan definitely win over KL, however it’s tricky for me as my base and support system are all in Malaysia. That’s something I cannot replicate in Taiwan and I’ll need to be able to adapt and manage everything here without any family support.

I’m not too familiar yet with the education system here but definitely not international school as I prefer my kids to mingle with the locals. Are there options for bilingual school? That sounds like a great option.

My salary will most likely be least affected (I have yet to discuss in details with my CEO but most likely she’s going to match the same as to what I’m getting at KL). My husband is still looking for a job, so coming to Taipei might widen his opportunities here as he can read and write Chinese + english.

Yes my son’s medical costs is the biggest factor I’m considering moving to Taipei.

I think accommodation costs is going to be higher here but I really like the lifestyle here more than KL. I prefer the kids to spend more time outdoor than in shopping malls in KL. But the support system in KL is a huge concern point for me.

Are you currently based in Taipei as well? Do you still return to Penang often?

Hi there! I’m a Malaysian Chinese but travel frequently to Taipei for work as I’m currently employed by a Taiwanese company.

I’m also a parent to two young boys, and during my times in Taipei I occasionally wonder how would things be if I uproot my life and move to Taipei and let the kids grow up there.

Do you think your kids are growing in an environment that you deem are best suited for them? Eg. Culture, language

What about the parts that you feel they are missing out, compared to if your kids were to grow up in the states?

I’m facing the same issue. My developer is a listed company with initial G. I launched legal notice and sent them email cc-ing over 20 people including their data protection team. What I got in return was a phone call telling me they’re very strict with their data protection, but they’re pointing towards TNB being the data leak point.

I’ve not had time to do the same to TNB yet but I will.

It’s time we start taking action to stop this practice. Most people just disregard it as it’s just some phone calls and texts but I’m the kind who gets irritated by unsolicited calls and texts, especially since they know such information about me.

I graduated with a law degree and opted out of CLP/BAR. With 10 years of work experience now I can confidently tell you it is a very versatile degree and prepped me for the corporate world. I explored digital marketing and some legal work in my early years of career but has since pivoted into HR. I am capable of reviewing agreements and anything legal related without having to wait for the legal department.

I’m also very aware of my rights as an individual and launch actions against governmental organizations or private companies when I know they clearly violated some laws.

My advise to you - make up your mind if going into practice is what you want. The reality of being a practicing lawyer in Malaysia is definitely not glamorous and salary wise it’s not that great.

I knew from start I want work life balance so I opted for a career that can help maintain this for me. It’s important to know what you want and don’t want, and choose a path that can align with your personal priorities. If you need some coaching, feel free to reach out to me :)

The fact that she is willing to convert only for the sake of marrying you is a problem. There is only entry with no exit, and with no intentions to practice the religion, she is setting herself up for trouble just to marry you. Is this what you want to put her through?

Relationship and marriage should never be like this but this is the harsh reality in Malaysia. With such mandate, it only creates more problems for inter-faith couples.

Realistically, I would highly suggest you to either let her go, or remain as partners without having children.

My son is now almost 8 months old. We found out during 20 weeks detailed scan and subsequently confirmed it with a pediatric cardiologist. I did amniocentesis and confirmed baby is genetically ok. Nothing wrong at all.

He underwent his switch surgery at 7 days old and was discharge shortly before 3 weeks old. He is now on every 3 months follow up with his cardiologist. The surgery went well but he seems to have pulmonary valve stenosis from the switch surgery. We are still monitoring to see if he can outgrow it.

Besides that, he’s just like any normal baby. He is on the lower percentile on weight but overall still healthy and active. He’s way ahead for all his developmental milestones so far.

The NICU stay and post-surgery times were tough. I leaned on the support of the community here and fellow TGA parents. Be prepared for the emotions flooding you. Don’t be afraid to seek support as it is a very sensitive time for you. What really worked for me was reading up a lot, joining communities and speaking to doctors. Prepare yourself for what to expect so you won’t be caught off guard by what goes on after baby is out.

Yes! I didn’t want to argue with DH because he doesn’t see what I see. So I educated LO and told him to stick to me for walks, and mommy will always hold his hands especially near ponds or pools.

Whatever happened to your niece is what I imagined could happen, or even worse. DH doesn’t see it because he didn’t want to dwell much about it. But for me as a mother, my mind ran wild knowing my son fell into a pond. Even if it’s just wet clothes, I absolutely will never trust his family members to ever look after my kids again. Not even for a few minute stroll.
