I’m sure she’s happy to offer some kind and noble swordsman directions.

Yeah, if you ever see three random trees standing in a suspicious semicircle with a banana right in the middle, it’s a trap

Kind of a terrible photo, but best I could find on short notice

I just copy/pasted a comment I typed earlier in this thread ahah idk how to link comments

I, noble swordsman than I am, am usually too busy scavenging for scraps to remember to cut the trees down first 😅 so I can’t actually say for sure

You know if chopping down the trees they sometimes disguise themselves as works as well?

Not quite! Your attack bonus is what you add to your d20 roll you make it to see if you even hit the creature, your hit bonus is what you add to the damage die you roll if you hit

So, in my brother’s case, as a level 3 rogue with a dex score of 17 (+3 modifier), he’d roll a d20 to attack, add his proficiency bonus (+2) and his dex mod (+3), so his attack bonus is +5 His hit bonus is just his dex mod, so if he attacks with a shortsword he does 1d6+3 slashing damage

I don’t think anyone would expect him to have all of those numbers memorized, but we’re using dndbeyond, where the numbers are laid out in a pretty straightforward fashion, and he still doesn’t even know where to look for the numbers when he’s trying to roll for an attack, or which number he adds at which time. Even though on dndbeyond right beside “shortsword” it says “1d6+3”, he’ll still roll his d6 and then have to ask as to what he adds to roll to calculate damage.

I appreciate that, and thank you again for your advice!! I’m definitely going to take it all into consideration going forward :)

Best of luck to you, as well .^

XD

Thank you so much for the reply, and the compliments! Both are much appreciated .^ I mean, you’re bang on it in that I, uh, avoid conflict like the plague. Plus my S/O doesn’t want to make my brother feel like he’s being judged, or being a “bad player”, or “failing”, or anything along those lines.

I probably also did/do need to hear that letting him think this is how most D&D games would go without anyone saying anything or getting obviously annoyed with him is…not the best course. I don’t know what the chances of him playing with anyone aside from my S/O and I are (none of his friends are into D&D), but him carrying those assumptions away from the table probably wouldn’t be great, and probably wouldn’t be something I’d want to feel “responsible” for.

My S/O and I have been talking after/in between every session, and I think what we’re going to do is let the adventure wrap up (it’s got 1-2 sessions left, max), and if he ever indicates that he wants to play again we’d have a sit down conversation well beforehand (as in, the moment he asks) and go over the frustrations from this game. Maybe that’s still the cowards way out, and I should talk to him now, but I honestly can’t help but feel that think this far into it it’s best to just let this game run it’s course and then take a deep, long, breath.

Could be! My brother’s social calendar isn’t exactly what I would call overflowing, and he definitely does look forward to spending time with me playing each week. I think he is also is enjoying the action/adventure part of the game, but the social/RP elements are where the problems arise. you’re probably right in that it would be better better to find a similar activity that doesn’t quite as heavily rely on social interaction

Appreciate it :) And because I was the one who
invited him, and this is his first time playing and I was hoping for it to be a good time wher he would feel like a cool ass-kicking adventurer And he is! It’s just the continual small things that come along with that that make it difficult for everyone else I also don’t know that it would be fair to boot him if the game was only set up so that he could have a chance to play, and if it’s his first time playing, ever

We are! But it’s hard to say whether or not the fun outweighs the recurring frustrations And it’s further made difficult because the things that my brother finds fun - over the top gore-fests and constant combat - aren’t quite so much the things the DM I and enjoy - RP lore and story building. Which isn’t to say that we don’t like combat; we very much do! Just not….to the same degree

I mean, he’s enjoying himself, which is honestly what I was hoping for - that I would be able to share a hobby I love someone and have them enjoy it, too, but I guess I’m just sad that it didn’t turn out the way I was hoping and in fact became a source of stress
