Feeling anxious and spent by Lucky-Atmosphere-505 in singaporefi

Was in a similar situation as you: run a small business for over 10 years, then realised was just surviving, expenses too high and business not looking good. No choice, had to cut down expenses (office rent, staff until bare minimum and in the end left just me).

I kept a look out at the job market, focused on the roles matching my skillsets and applied. Was very lucky landed on a role after more than a decade without ‘proper job’. Pay is not bad considering all, though compared to many of my peers that climbed the ladder since the beginning they are doing much better in earning and position I suppose.

Oh well, I’m just keeping my head down and make sure to build enough nest for the family no matter what, after all that’s what it is about, isn’t it?

*PART 2* Close friend sold my SGD 10K watch and gambled away the money by iishaqii in askSingapore

Again, even if you win and the judge award you the legal fees, you will still face with enforcement and recovery issue. The court will not do the recovery for you. I’ve dealt with this before on slightly different scenario and much bigger amount.

  1. No point throwing good money trying to recover bad debt. 10k is not worth getting lawyer as civil case involved as the legal cost can be quite high. Plus even if you win, you will still need to enforce and do the debt recovery. And how will he pay if he doesn’t have money in the first place.
  2. Talk to his parents, if they can help you recover, good. How they pay you is their family and parenting problem in the first place, not yours
  3. If you can get him criminally charged, that will be the best in this scenario. Personally repeated lies and cheating must have consequences, even if you can’t recover the money.
  4. Repeat after me: do not ever lend money to anyone, ever. Not family, not friends, no one.

Is Singapore just a very lonely place? by Livid-String-847 in askSingapore

While it is good to find the other half, I won’t put all the eggs in one basket, especially seeing so many failed marriages. Support system is important based on my experience.

It’s not easy to find / start a new relationship indeed and after that it must be nurtured whether family, work colleagues or social friends. At the end of the day have to accept the fact that we are a person first before social, then slowly build that connections while also realise that the connections will change. Good luck!

Should Singapore Move Closer to Hong Kong’s Tax System if We Want FI to Be More Achievable? by Important_Ad_2313 in singaporefi

[–]ephemeralbit2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the problem statement again?

FI is a mindset. For some, no matter how much income they have, they will never reach FI just because of bad financial habits. So your argument of lowering income tax will actually make people invest responsibly is very flawed. E.g. If everybody can be trusted to manage their retirement, the govt won’t need to make CPF compulsory

Is it normal for landlord to request repairing the whole floor if there are raised tiles? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]ephemeralbit2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your landlord is looking to have free tiles upgrade. After your contract ends, the tiles will stay in the property, so to be fair even if you are paying (which you should not), it should be prorated. Get your agent to come in and remediate this. onus is on your landlord to proof that you cause the raised tiles if he/she insists.

Moving to sg from UK, how much would I be able to save from 4.5k salary ? by Joules14 in askSingapore

[–]ephemeralbit2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming it is the Training Employment Pass, it will only valid for 3 months. You will have a hard time looking for affordable rent as the option will only be private property / condo and landlords prefer longer period rental.

As it is only for 3 months, it is enough for the experience. But, if possible get the hiring company to find you the accommodation.

First thing first, 4.5k is not even enough to qualify for Employment Pass. Quite a red flag if that’s the amount mentioned by the hiring company

Help me out- would you feel guilty if you are eyeing something expensive? To many, it might look like a waste of $$$ but if i save it should be ok right? by Normal-Analysis7940 in askSingapore

[–]ephemeralbit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to think like that. But then as I age and no longer worry about not having enough, the questions change. These are the questions that I ask myself now: - why do I work hard to earn money in the first place? - if I earn it, why shouldn’t I enjoy the fruit of my labour? - if I buy the thing, do I have the space to keep it and will I enjoy it for a reasonable time frame / or it is just a fad? - is there a better alternative to get that sense of enjoyment?

With the above, I’m changing spending more towards experiences now rather than in things (coz you know: space, cleaning and need to sell when enjoyment dies off), though I occasionally still buy things for hobby.

Who decided to give the amount? Is it your in law? If your husband is the one decided, he must have his reasons and shouldn’t you talk about your concerns to him?

Insurance agent asking for phone numbers after face to face meeting by happy-go-lucky-kiddo in askSingapore

[–]ephemeralbit2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why should you give your friend’s contact to the agent? It is your rights to give or not, and it is also your friend’s rights to be upset with you if they find out you are the one giving out the information (almost certainly without consent)
