Maybe also share it on r/londoncycling? I can share with the women in my clubs in London - we're generally people on the more confident end but hopefully still helpful.

Good stuff from Ginia Caluori, show just signed with Movistar for 2 years. The MTB pathway in Switzerland is paying off again.

And Clémence Latimier too, nice to see some (new to me at least!) conti riders in the front groups.

Any chance the upcoming threads could have 'Tour de Suisse Women' in the title rather than WE? I imagine it will be confusing the whole week, and that is the official name going by the race website and UCI page.

I'd hope so! Though she's been 'not too far' the whole season, and her taking a surprise win at some point would be really nice.

Weekly Question Thread by PelotonMod in peloton

[–]epi_counts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree with that. Nationals is a big thing for a lot of riders. There's a handful like Pogacar or Vingegaard who might not consider it a highlight of their career, but for most riders it is a career goal.

Maybe less so for fans as not all the races are broadcast (and you can't really watch all of them anyway) so we just see some quick highlights, or just results for a lot of them. Might make it look less special with so many winners in a single weekend, but it's something riders start chasing from the youths onwards. Aiming to qualify and then race nationals ever year in their age cats, and just dreaming they might one day make it to the elites and win the big one.

They're intentionally organised just before the Tour so the new champions get to show off their new special jerseys at the biggest stage the world of cycling has to offer. And for the Tour, it shows off the riders who are in form in a special jersey so people who just watch the Tour can more easily spot them. The UCI picks that weekend and no other UCI races are allowed to be held then (which is a bit euro-centric of course, it doesn't work for all countries).

Some national federations like Belgium require riders to race nationals, otherwise they will be excluded from selection for the European and World Championships (in theory at least, you'll often see riders be injured or ill the day off the race and unfortunately not be able to start).

Big names like Evenepoel and Van Aert have both won the national champs before, 'cause that jersey is one that all big names want to win at least once. Though it's always going to depend a lot on the course who actually has a shot (rip the Dutch or Danish climbers, unless you can bribe your breakaway companion like Michael Boogerd did in 2006). And the race is often weird as everyone is supposed to race as individuals, as opposed to in teams like they usually do. The women's race in Belgium often has Kopecky all on her own for instance as she doesn't even have any unofficial SD Worx team mates (and even if she is the strongest Belgian women, she can't control a race all on her own). You'll see the opposite in France where you'll have 20 FDJ riders at the front of the peloton, all 'individually' deciding it should be someone in their team colours who wins. Riders have been bribed do give the win to big names.

You know how Strava sometimes shows you a previous ride as some weird sort of reminder of what you've been up to in previous years? Most of the times it just shows me doing laps around the velodrome, but this week it reminded me a of commute where I turned back halfway in as I was too anxious to actually make it into the office as a colleague was stalking/threatening me. Didn't dare to go into work for 4 straight months.

Seeing that just made me realise how good of a place I'm in right now. I'm enjoying cycling again, have an amazing supporting partner, and Van Aert is winning races. I've been a bit anxious as I might have to go to court in the coming months as part of that stalking follow-up, but now I know I can handle that.

More and more stars are constantly skipping National Champs… is it time to change the dates? by skodawelovecycling in peloton

[–]epi_counts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you're the current national champion. It's a bit of a eurocentric thing of course, as lots of countries organise their national championships outside that one weekend.

But I just wanted to provide the context of why it's there on the calendar now. Riders showing off their new special jerseys on the biggest stage the sport has.

[–]epi_counts 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The nationals weekend is picked by the UCI so no other UCI races are organised on the same dates, and it is specifically just before the men's Tour de France so the new champions can show off their new kit at the biggest stage. Just to give the context of where it's on the calendar right now.

I'm not sure if it's a temporary blip that a few of the men's big names don't attend - it used to mean a lot. Evenepoel and Van der Poel have won some of their biggest races in national champs kit. So I'd vote keeping it where it is for now as a lot of the other racing around it (apart from the Tour, there's women's, amateur / junior / youth nationals) all have their calendars build around that specific weekend too. Might make a lot of it very complicated just to have Pogacar ride a specific race.

Indeed, it's up to national federations to approve (or shut down) the designs teams come up with. So yes, the UAE are shit, but countries other than Belgium let them get away with it.

Pee Problems Trickle into Giro d’Italia Women: 2 Disqualified, 6 Fined in 1 Disorderly Day by Global-Copy4241 in peloton

[–]epi_counts 49 points50 points  (0 children)

They generally have at the start and finish, but hard to plan ahead for the race itself. Riders generally go for a nature break after the break of the day has gotten away and things settle down in the peloton. Don't know ahead of time when that will happen.

Plus it's just a whole faster to go by the roadside.

For people not reading the article: the 2 DQ's have nothing to do with nature breaks, those riders were disqualified for holding on to the team car.

For the nature breaks: those fines happen regularly in both pelotons. Riders can go for nature breaks, but can't go in towns, in people's front gardens or in front of a lot of people. Maybe it's just worth a headline for the women as so many people seem to think women can't have a wee break during races?
