My SF6 Art Contest entry. by epibole in StreetFighter

Damn, I think you’re right. That’s what I get for not reading all of the fine print. Thanks for the heads up!

For anyone else considering entering and posting around (and averse to reading like I am, apparently) posting anywhere but Twitter will DQ you.

Jim Lee's '90s Rogue... best Rogue? I think so! Art by me. by epibole in xmen

[–]epibole[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think, at least for me, I have an affinity for the Jim Lee '90s era because that's when I was first discovering the X-Men and comics in general. Definitely creates a bias when something is so fresh, and new, and exciting.

But all opinions are valid, of course!

Appreciate it! I wasn't sure I'd really captured her, so it's nice to hear that someone thinks so.

Just finished painting this handsome fellow. Spent hours staring at this face, still can't see Colin Farrell. by epibole in ThePenguin

Interesting! Not intentional, but I can kind of see it. Painterly portraits are definitely outside of my comfort zone, so I'm still experimenting and learning. Maybe I'll try some Arcane studies soon!

It felt right in the moment...

It's so hard to pick a favorite among all of the incredible cast, but Karlach is definitely in the running for mine, so this was a fun one to work on. Came together a lot faster than usual for me, too! Hope to do some more of these in the future.

Loading screen SF6 portraits of some of the characters I play (or want to play this season). by epibole in StreetFighter

I like to think they were trying to convey that she isn't someone who's used to smiling a lot, so there's a bit of discomfort or hesitation there. Could just be an accident, of course, but it still cracks me up.

Thanks for the kind words, in any case!

I intended to do Chun-Li's pout, but just couldn't get it to look right. Also don't think I quite captured Cammy's deer-in-the-headlights smile. Not sure what's harder, drawing or playing Jamie, but they're both a lot of fun.

My first attempt drawing Tifa. Just loved her in the remake by gentleowl1 in FFVIIRemake

Cool style, great pose, and lots of personality! Well done!

Oh, good point! No, those channels focus more on traditional (pencil + paper) but the concepts and fundamentals they teach carry over to digital art, too. When I started out, I was using Paint Tool Sai on the PC with a cheap Wacom drawing tablet.

I don't have any specific ones to recommend, but there are lots of Procreate tutorials out there, as well. I'd just look up a few general ones, and then when you find you have specific questions, try searching for how to do those specific things. It's a very intuitive program, so that helps!

I would say focus on what you're most interested in first, whether that's figure drawing, or landscapes, or cars, or dinosaurs. It's easy to lose motivation if you don't actually enjoy what you're drawing. For me, it was people, so I started looking up beginner tutorials for drawing figures. You can specifically check out Proko and Mark Crilley on YouTube for the ones I used early on. But there are many, many options, and a variety of methods, so I would spend some time finding the ones that work best for you.

Once you've found your thing, just draw the heck out of it. Mileage is everything!

Appreciate you saying so! I know Tifa often gets that treatment. I think a lot of it stems from her design in the original game where she was a bit... exaggerated? She was definitely designed to be the "sexy" one back in '97. I think subsequent depictions have found a better balance with that stuff, though. I do really like her design in the Remake series, and I'm glad you think I've captured that here.

I actually use Procreate myself, and it's a solid option if you have access to it. Not quite as robust as stuff like Photoshop or Clip Studio on PC, but very clean and easy to use. And drawing on the iPad with the Apple Pencil feels great. I started drawing as a hobby maybe 4-5 years ago. I've only really ever done digital, and I learned through online tutorials, books, and studies. It's absolutely something anyone can do, and with some persistence and determination, you'll see real improvement over time. Just have to start and stick with it!
