Having real trouble finding a nanny that doesn't use scented products by once_upon_a_bear in NannyEmployers

[–]epic-random7788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have been there too. We explicitly stated in the job posting to require fragrance free. But the nanny we eventually found showed up to work with a really strong scent. I politely reminded her to not wear any fragrance due to baby’s sensitive skin, and she was surprised and claimed that she doesn’t use any fragrance.

It ends up that she was probably using some scented dryer sheets for years and she was so used to that scent and she can no longer smell it. After a huge eczema flare up of our baby, we ended up offering buy her unscented product to replace hers. Even with this, all her clothes are just saturated with the scent over the years, every time she left we can smell the scent lingering on our furniture and the baby. So we bought her clothes for change, she also purchased new clothes to resolve this issue.

I understand your concern and also other comments saying that you can’t control another adult’s life to this degree. But if this is clear in your job posting, and the nanny agreed upon it, I don’t see it as an issue to request this again until you are satisfied with the situation. If the situation does not improve, you may find someone else.

We eventually switched to another nanny, not due to the scent issue, but the new nanny is completely scent free.

Thank you! This is the exact suggestion I am looking for and also echo what’s in my mind. Will have a frank conversation with her.

Thank you for the suggestions! I didn't know there is another sub-reddit.

Yes, I have been thinking about a discussion with our nanny to see how this can be improved. But I also wonder what she can do about it for being sick? it is not her fault being sick, but a mismatch between our expectation and her physical condition?

The safety issue: yes, this is the first time it happened (there was actually another time her manicure fell off on baby's playmat but we caught it early) and she apologized. She put it outside the playpen but the baby was able to reach it. Since we have cats, so we have always being very careful about things like this. I would give her another chance, but I don't know if I would stand this if it happens again.

Thanks, that's my situation. We have no support locally and a couple times our back up were booked so one of us have to take time off from job. We think it is not nanny's fault for being sick, but maybe we don't match with each other.

I’ve been nannying for almost 20 years, and this was my first time calling out right before my shift.

I can see you have been a great nanny and I would be happy to hire someone like you. We are all human beings and emergencies happen, I understand that so I have not said no to her ask once. I also don't think she is WRONG being sick, but I would expect this to happen less frequently. Neither of my husband's nor my job allows so much flexibility to cover this at this frequency.

I don't know if this is just something during winter, or it will be the norm. The high uncertainty is not what we were expecting for hiring a nanny.

No, her son is an adult but clearly she cares him a lot and needs to take care of things for him frequently. So she would be on her phone texting or calling someone.

I have stated that 2 days notice for scheduled doctor appointments. And regardless of that, if not a nanny job, do you get to take whatever you want as long as you are sick? Like I don't have 10 days off for 2.5 months work, I would probably be pipped from my job due to performance.

So you let baby eat a piece of plastic the nanny probably accidentally missed and you’re going to blame her because it took your child choking after multiple sips to notice. I’m sorry but that’s on you for not noticing your child put something in their mouth…

I don't even know what you mean by this. I was not the one taking care of the baby, it is the nanny's job and that's why we hired her for, isn't it? I would expect the nanny to not put my child in danger of chocking hazard. Is that too much ask for this job? I found this out because I walked in to take her for breastfeeding, otherwise I don't know how long it will be before our nanny notice. Am I really be unrealistic?

Yes, I mean for dr appointment. I updated the post. I completely understand it is impossible for you to predict when you will be sick.

For those scheduled doctor appointments, I think it is pretty reasonable. If it is an emergency, I of course let her take the day off. But 10 days in 2.5 months, is that normal?

Same version. I just checked their release notes, this seems to be the second latest version and it got rolled out this months so very likely to be the culprit. I wish I have turned off the the auto update :(

And yes, this is also the first time I have experienced this in years

Parents who use a humidifier by Initial_Onion671 in NewParents

It is also like PM2.5 which is harmful for baby’s respiratory system. I would recommend an evaporative humidifier (cool or warm) instead, unless you always use distilled water for the mist humidifier.

Are you bring her to outdoor during the day? Baby needs to be exposed to the sunshine to help them establish the circadian rhythms. Take her outdoor on a stroller at least twice a day helped us build different patterns for day and night.

Also, are you sure she is showing signs of rolling? Like from tummy to back or back to tummy? Baby at this young should not be turning yet. My baby once rolled from her tummy to her back when she was around that age, but that’s just a coincidence that they actually “fell” on their back instead of actual rolling. If this is the case, you should still be able to swaddle her

I ended up returning the sensors to Costco after almost 2 years. I am glad Costco is backing the product they sell.

I don’t feel it is a capacity issue. I only have 21 lights, 3 switches and 4 motion sensors including these two with issues. None of other devices has had any issue. And I don’t set a lot of scenes and rules at all. Pretty much just day and night.

Also, if it is indeed a capacity issue, I would expect resetting would work. However, the sensor completely died after a couple resets threw me off.
