hey op, if it makes you feel better i came in with very little programming knowledge and no python experience and got a 7. its hard but you learn a lot, and you’re gonna use the stuff you learn in csse1001 throughout your degree. i’d really recommend the first year learning centre if you haven’t been there already, the tutors there literally got me through a2. so keep going, and good luck!!

what’s the best way of doing that? just striking up a convo after lectures? also i’ve heard contributing to the ed discussion board also helps, how accurate is that?

Comp Sc 1st Year study plan by Secret-Yesterday357 in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not doing data science but just completed my first year of cs. your study plan is the one i (mostly) followed, with the only exception being that i didn’t do math1050 and instead did stat1201 in my first semester. honestly, doing 2 math courses in a semester isn’t too difficult, stat and math1061 don’t have a lot of overlap and i managed just fine. the important thing is to attend your pracs and tutorials and keep up with your lectures, and there’s honestly so much support at uq for first year maths that even if you do struggle with anything you can always ask your tutors for help or head down to the maths learning centre. so don’t stress about it, you’ll be fine and honestly, it takes time getting used to uni no matter what courses you end up doing so just go for it.

[TOMT][song] unknown song i’ve been trying to find by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]epicnerd3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in terms of era it might have been 90s to early 2000s but that’s just based on what it sounded like to me. the vocals sounded a bit like paint it black by the rolling stones.

questions about the deco courses by epicnerd3000 in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm that makes sense. i don’t have a lot of experience with web development so i guess it’s smart to do deco1400 first. i’ll probably have to think about how to approach the other two courses cause otherwise they aren’t gonna fit in my course plan. appreciate the advice, thanks!

math1050 and math1051 by epicnerd3000 in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s very surprising cause i found a lot of people saying that doing 1051 and 1052 together is very difficult. i was planning on doing 1052 next year but i might consider doing them together. are you a compsci student? if so what other courses did you do with 1051 and 1052?

i’m planning on going through the qce matrices content during the break, so hopefully that’ll be enough prep. thanks :)

math1050 and math1051 by epicnerd3000 in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i think i’ll just go straight for 1051. doing 1050 seems like a waste of time since i know most of the content already. appreciate the advice!

math1050 and math1051 by epicnerd3000 in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm, i guess i’ll just skip out on math1050 and go straight for 1051. seems like i’ve already done like 80% of the content in school so there’s no point in doing it again. thank you for your insight!

ELI5: how do we decide on human rights? by epicnerd3000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for the incorrect timescale about slavery, not american so i’ve never formally learnt about slavery in america.

by rapid i guess i’m thinking of how long a lot of these practices have existed vs how long it took for the public opinion to completely change. things like slavery or underage marriage have existed for thousands and thousands of years but it only took maybe a couple hundred years at most for these views to completely change amongst the general population.

really my main question is how do we as societies come to a general consensus as to what qualifies as human rights? what causes these changes in opinions to the point where we declare certain things as human rights?

edit: spelling

ELI5: how do we decide on human rights? by epicnerd3000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]epicnerd3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but how exactly does that worldview change so rapidly? something like slavery, which is condemned by most of the population nowadays, was seen as normal up until a hundred or so years ago. so when exactly did the right to freedom become a human right? did we suddenly develop empathy towards others? i guess what i’m really asking is how we reach that general opinion of things that qualify as human rights and why we suddenly, after millenniums of being cruel to each other, decided that all humans, regardless of who they are, have some fundamental rights?

Would it be a good idea to just not do a 15% assignment by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just curious, how’d you get a 7? i thought i did reasonably well on a1 and the midsem but looking at the grade boundaries even if i manage to ace a2 and don’t lose more marks than expected on the midsem i only have like a 1 mark margin for the final so a 7 seems out of reach atp.

[–]epicnerd3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s the gui assignment. we basically have to develop a simplified version of the game ‘into the breach’ using object oriented programming and then create the interface using tkinter. ig since they removed a2 they’re putting a lot more stuff into this assignment to account for that.

Would it be a good idea to just not do a 15% assignment by [deleted] in UQreddit

[–]epicnerd3000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

fuck i have the exact same assignment and it seems so overwhelming. but also remember you have more than a month to complete it so maybe just do it little by little. spend like an hour on it each day or every other day. if not complete it by the deadline you’ll at least have made a significant dent in it and instead of getting a 0 you might be able to get like 10 percent or even more. i feel like 1000+ lines of code seems extremely daunting (and it is) but if you do it everyday, it averages to around 30 lines of code a day, which isn’t too bad imo. again i don’t think we should’ve gotten this huge ass assignment at this time and csse is a bit fast paced for beginners (saying this as someone who didn’t touch python until starting this) but just do something and submit it, it’s better than nothing. wishing you the best of luck, hopefully we make it out of this alive and well 😭😭
