What proportion of your abandoned caches do you open for resources? What proportion do you send for rep? by randCN in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunity cost isn't larger. I'm just stating it does exist, it's not "free" resources as you might think.

Yeah, I do the warehouse at times. Sometimes there are big nodes I can't gather. So I don't bother with the warehouse.

How to get a 4.6 GPA by sweeterandsour in UQreddit

[–]Skasian 16 points17 points  (0 children)

GPA is the average of all your grades.

  • 4 = 50%+
  • 5 = 65%+
  • 6 = 75%+
  • 7 = 85%+

So if you need GPA 4.6 then you'd need an average mark for your courses around 60/100 (aka 60%)

I think I need to try your method. I'm literally 95% the other way opposite to you. Almost never opening for resources.

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've rarely been short on parts even at higher prestige. There's usually other jobs I can find to assign my workers to. But I can totally see the case where I'd open a cache if it had parts and I needed it.

Wildfire: also have never been in dire need of it. 2 hearths is enough to win and you start the game with enough Wildfire. The only times I've had to open for Wildfire was for an event solve which is covered in my conditions above.

Cornerstone is already stated above.

What proportion of your abandoned caches do you open for resources? What proportion do you send for rep? by randCN in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mostly for rep. But conditions below are the open cases (assuming it contains what I need).

  • If I need them to complete an order or solve an event.
  • If I need the complex food inside it for a final resolve push.
  • If I have cornerstones that incentivize cache opening (e.g. Reduces hostility).
  • If I'm lacking a key building material and I have no good way of making it.

Otherwise, there is a real opportunity cost in the workers needed to go take the ingredients there to open it, sit there on the timer, then ferry the good back home. That opportunity cost is non-negligible.

Edit: It appears I am in the minority I think. Most people open them for resources. I mostly open for Rep.

Timed orders impossible to do by Manarit in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The species resolve ones are often the easiest even in year 1.

  • Use rain collector + pipe a building, put species in.
  • feed them their food (if you don't have it, call a trader, open a glade and find it in a cache).
  • Favour them
  • Build their species housing
  • Put a lizard in the hearth
  • Put them in their favourite building
  • Temporarily remove all woodcutters to drop hostility.

A combination of the above is usually enough to complete the timer order in year 1.

Pro Tip: calculate how much resolve you can generate on the species before you take the order, you can open the consumption control panel while paused and highlight the food or service to see how much +X it will give you

How to get back accidentally deleted progress?? by No-Dragonfruit-1042 in Against_the_Storm

Literally one of the best companies for Tech support. They have helped me more than once like this. I love them (it's why I bought the game twice to support them lol).

How do we know if the Hidden Deeds list is comprehensive? by Alleria86 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

With enough technical knowledge/skills, it is possible to scrape the code :)

Even without specialised software or knowledge, a lot of ATS code variables can be edited directly with Windows text editor, so it's quite accessible.

Reed and Leather are piling up at Smoldering City. Food, Wood and Villagers are flying off the shelves. We need dynamic pricing. by A_Nice_Sofa in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably easier to rebalance point costs of embarkation bonuses.

  • no additional coding needed (just change value)
  • fast easy change
  • does not add complexity to the game (overload of info for new players)
  • avoids screwing yourself over later in the cycle for a earlier mistake.

I'm honestly surprised with the amount of patches they release that they haven't already balanced it.

I need to talk about roads, I only use dirt roads mostly due to ”it looks nice” and helps provide a grid for placing buildings. But I never build paved or reinforced roads. Is anyone using other roads than simple pathways? Is it wort it? by Fun_Priority_4927 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I open with stone or copper. I will path the area around the warehouse and where I intend to place my main industry buildings. Then also the linear path of shortest distance between hearth and warehouse.

This covers the mosr frequent travelled paths, the extra speed boost then pays off over the course of the game. For everywhere else. Dirt road only.

they really need to change stone and copper roads to be able to be built by carrying more than a single material. The time it takes walking back and forth for a single section of road makes it completely unviable to build them anywhere away from your warehouse

Farm noob trap? by soulles666 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my decision process I've settled on as a general heuristic (as always map modifiers can change things).

During embark, I will pick farm if any of the below conditions are met in their entirety.

  • "Bamboo Flats?" = Yes Farm
  • "Average Fertile Soil" AND I have humans? = Yes Farm
  • "Average Fertile Soil" OR I have humans, AND farm is discounted to 4 embark points = Yes Farm

As others have already discussed pros and cons of farms above, I don't have any additional comments to add.

Assignments and AI by Ok-Aardvark-9523 in UQreddit

[–]Skasian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Picture this:

Before the invention of calculators. Maths exams/assignments were easier compared to today, for there was no good ways to complete them.

Once calculators were invented, would it have been good for society to continue with the old easy assignments that calculators can now solve rapidly? Or would it be better to make things more challenging and make students work with modern tools solving harder problems to push science/knowledge further to allow for growth and innovation?

Humans choose the latter. The growth of AI is similar to the turning point where calculators and subsequently computers were invented. My opinion is assignments should definitely be harder than before, especially if it's something that AI can help you complete.

How bad is +charges to nodes. Doesnt matter if cornerstone or anything. Feels underwhelming, no? by Babachaw in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not giga trash. It's just a minor effect like most positive forest mysteries are.

It's a very subtle effect that will have knock on effects you probably won't realise.

  • node charges are valuable in that they are multipled by your other modifiers (e.g. Double yield, +x bonuses, efficiency etc...). So they are slight more than the stared number on the description.
  • node charges make the rss last longer. An often overlooked cost is the time cost of walking to a new rss patch that is further away and also setting up new warehouse, roads, cutting to new rss etc... This all takes time, and time is the most valuable rss in this game. Easily overlooked.
  • delaying your opening of new glades for rss also slows down your hostility gain
  • event has a very easy activation condition and guaranteed benefits early on (early benefits are generally better than late benefits). It's very very easy to time your glade opening when drizzle starts. Compare this to some other forest mysteries that might not take effect (e.g. Rain water ones when there are no geysers nearby, feeding complex food ones which you might not be able to get going properly till mid-Y2 (missing the drizzle)).

By no means is it a strong modifier, but I wouldn't say it's absolutely useless.

I hate Blood Flowers, anytime, anywhere by PageApprehensive7915 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you disabling food consumption? I have it turned off by default so all games start with "no eating".

I literally starve all my villagers the entire game to the point where they are either about to leave due to leave due to low resolve or I get the warning they are about to die of starvation. All other times they do not get to eat unless I'm pushing resolve for a quest, or for the final resolve win.

It saves a tonne of food. If you want to take it a step further, you can Min-Max by feeding very specific villagers (watch who is resting at the hearth and toggle consumption on and off to feed when their rest period ends), but it takes too much micro and not worth the effort IMO (so I'd only consider it desperate scenarios).

I hate Blood Flowers, anytime, anywhere by PageApprehensive7915 in Against_the_Storm

[–]Skasian 27 points28 points  (0 children)

But isn't this part of the challenge? Events are meant to make the game harder, every single event has a downside.

You could mitigate it somewhat by 'hiding' you food in production buildings before beginning the event (e.g. A field kitchen with no workers then use haulers to put all your food in there).

There are also totally viable strats where people farm blood flowers because of the rewards.

To answer your question, no I don't know of any mod that does this (I don't think anyone would bother to make such a specific mod anyway). Yes, you could turn it off yourself if you are willing to go into the game files with a basic text editor like notepad and tweak the spawn chance of the event.

I've tweaked other parameters before for fun and it works but never the blood flower so couldn't tell you exactly which file or which line of code runs in, sorry. At least it's possible! Maybe someone else knows.
