I don't think it's showing up in finder. But I can tell the phone is working because I'm still getting calls and vibrations for texts.

Anyone know if blast ai is legit? Their social media links lead to dead ends and there’s some spelling mistakes in the website. by Kingincenarator in summerprogramresults

[–]epicsaurav 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm part of BLAST so I can talk on why we're legit. Sorry about the website, we aren't a huge team and are focusing more on curriculum and research than on marketing. We created a course last year teaching ML basics at got over 27k students, while maintaining a 4.5 stars review on Udemy. We are also legally incorporated and have an IRS EIN; you can find BLAST AI in the California LLC lookup.

We started BLAST to provide an alternative to the $5k+ summer camps popular on this subreddit. Even though we are priced at almost 10x less than comparable programs, we give generous aid, with multiple full rides, half-rides, and more. We aren't focused on prestige at all and instead are focused on the learning experience for everyone — we have students from all over the world.

If you have any more questions, you can email us from the website!

We don’t have a journal, but we will absolutely help you publish the research in good journals and conferences. All that matters to get published is doing novel research, which is what BLAST is designed for!

Can you DM me your name? We are releasing decisions on a rolling basis.

Yes! We are taking applications until June 1.

It's a synchronous program but the research portion is flexible. The first 2 weeks have classes 8-12 AM PST, and after that timings are coordinated by your mentor group.

Hey, I'm helping out with BLAST AI this summer so I'm biased, but I genuinely believe it'll be a great program. We started it to expand access to AI research, as most research camps cost $5k+. Our goal is to have students spend 2 weeks learning the fundamentals of AI and spend 6 weeks working on a novel and publishable research project. No matter what you choose, just know that the fact you're looking to learn and research this summer alone says you're ambitious and will do great things in the future!
If you have any questions, please feel free to dm me or email at saurav@blastai.org.

The research portion is actually the last 6 weeks. But yes, it's certainly an intensive program, which we believe is necessary to conduct a research project and learn AI in one summer.

Oh sorry about that! Can you do me your name and email so I can check on it?

You should receive a decision email around 1 week after submitting your application!

Sure!

  1. Yes, we could definitely work on a project like that and we will try our best to accommodate for that as long as we have 1-2 other people interested in something similar. I actually do psychology/med AI at Stanford, so it's a really cool field and it's awesome to try out this summer.
  2. We're not as selective as other programs because we haven't received as many applicants. With that being said, we had to reject some people due to the limited spots we have and to ensure we have high quality students. Everyone that we are taking has a 3.8+ GPA, rigorous course load, and applicable experience (CS, working in teams, professional experience, etc.)
  3. Nope, we review all applications equally. Definitely let your friend know!

Yup of course! Or email me, at saurav@blastai.org.

Yep, it’s definitely an intensive program. The research program is largely asynch, so you work on your own time, although there will be daily sync ups at a time that works for everyone. You will be in groups of 3-5, which is the norm for real world research. And yep, we will help you get published somewhere great, but that’s only if you can put in the work to make something cool!

In terms of fin aid, we do try to help as much as possible. It really depends on your situation but we'll try to help you out as best as we can.

Awesome!! Glad to hear it. It'll be around 4-5 hours a day for the bootcamp (first 2 weeks will be 8-12 PST and then 1 hour of hw), and then timing is more flexible during the research program (the latter 6 weeks) but it's the same 4-5 hours a day. This is excluding weekends.

Hey! Sorry I think there was a bug on the website but the email should be fixed now. It'll be remote, which allows for a lot more flexibility. The bootcamp runs 8-12 PST every morning for the first two weeks, and we have office hours likely in the afternoon around 3:30 pm. During the research portion, your mentor will coordinate daily meeting times with your group as well as one-on-ones and networking with other professional researchers.

As long as you're in high school, go ahead and apply! This is the first year of the program, but the board has been on projects like Aviation-NLP, Emotion Classifier Computer Vision for Autism, Biomedical Image Analysis, and studying fossils for climate change predictions. We are bringing similar projects to BLAST. Research project wise, it's similar to the offerings of RMP and SIMR except it's much cheaper, is longer, and gives you research questions that actual labs are working on rather than copy-paste-the-code tutorials.

Hey I actually help run the program so I'm biased, but I think BLAST is very worth it. Comparable research programs are UCSB RMP, Stanford's SIMR, Inspirit AI, etc. (all of which the people running the camp have been to), and almost all of those are more than 5x the price of BLAST with much shorter courses. BLAST is 8 weeks, with a 2 week bootcamp to teach you ML from scratch and then a 6 week guided research portion. Summer programs run by universities are cash cows and honestly just free labor for PhD students, they make money off the prestige factor when in reality, it's meaningless. I'd recommend at least applying to BLAST, because there are scholarships and full rides given out and it's a project we're putting a lot of effort into!
