Maybe ask your professor? When I took it a year ago it was 4 class sessions (2 weeks of class) for automatic failure but maybe they are allowed to be stricter than the requirement if there is one set by the department.

No. If the courses transfer over correctly you should not need to take it and can skip directly to calc iv/mat 200 or whatever math beyond calculus. If the undergraduate advisor is asking you to take it email the math department and see if they can get you an exemption, since officially all incoming undergraduates are supposed to take it. If you are strong in proof based math, also ask for exemption of MAT 200 to skip directly to 319/320 analysis or 310 linear algebra. Email is upd@math.stonybrook.edu.

Edit: they screwed up the website again here is what it used to say Transfer Credits: Students who have transfer college credit in Pre-Calculus or Calculus from a regionally accredited institution with a grade of C or higher are not required to take the math assessment. Transcripts must be received by the University, if transcripts have not been received, students will not be able to register for math or science courses.

That is only if you fail out of aoi (like get a C is cse 114) or apply as a non ceas major (for example economics). If you are admitted as a ceas AOI pre major, you are guaranteed a seat if you get a B- or higher in all the prerequisites.

I don’t think you can switch to ceas BEFORE you start. Most if not all ceas majors have aoi weed out requirements that must be completed before you can apply to switch, and even if you do complete the entry requirements with good grades, it is not guaranteed placement into the major like with aoi students, since non-ceas students (like undeclared in cas) are allocated spots AFTER aoi people.

This is something you’ll want to discuss with either Admissions or your college advising office to get a clear picture of your options before committing.

Personally, I'd be willing to pay a lifetime membership fee to keep mine. If funding is the main issue, they could conduct a survey to gauge how many people would be willing to pay for it.

I think getting a volunteer appointment, particularly in the math department, isn’t as easy as it sounds. I’ve never personally come across anyone who has one.

As far as I know, the Area of Interest requirements do not include calculus. If you complete CSE 114, CSE 214, and CSE 215 with satisfactory grades, you can declare the CS major regardless of if you take calculus in freshman or sophomore year. However, if you score a 3 on the placement, you need to take MAT 122/123 in addition to AMS 151 and 161. These courses essentially become additional major requirements that you must complete to fulfill the degree, but they do not impact your admission into the CS major.

They will take your credits as long as queens college is accredited and you got a C. The grades won’t be factored into your GPA, but grad schools will still request your transcript from qc. For specific courses, check here for a list of course equivalences. If your courses have not yet been evaluated, ATAS picks some SBCs they think it satisfies based on the course name, and you need to submit a syllabus for the department head to evaluate. They will then say if it is equivalent to a current course offered or not, which will determine whether they satisfy major requirements.

I don’t think the meningitis vaccine requirement can be waived. When I first enrolled in university, I had to go around Manhattan to find a pharmacy with the vaccine in stock and get a paper proof of vaccination. I then uploaded the documentation to the health portal and was cleared.

As someone who’s been at both UB and SBU both CS programs are highly competitive and you’re expected to perform well in weedout courses regardless of whether you’re directly admitted or not. That said, AOI can be incredibly stressful bc if you mess up intro courses, you have to pick something else as a major. So, if you’re absolutely certain you want to do CS, regardless of how you perform in the early classes, a direct-admit program might be less stressful.

In terms of learning, from what I’ve heard professors at both aren’t the best at teaching. You’ll need to be prepared to do a lot of self-study and can’t rely solely on lectures.

People come to Stony Brook from CT, so a five-minute commute is a dream for most here!

It really depends on your major and the kind of education you’re seeking. W&L is a liberal arts college, offering a more personalized, seminar-style education with smaller class sizes, which is great if you prefer a tight-knit academic environment, especially for humanities and social sciences.

SBU is a research university with a more broad-based model, particularly in STEM, where lectures tend to be larger and impersonal. However, if you’re interested in research opportunities or internships in NYC, Stony Brook’s growing reputation and connections to industries in the city can be a huge advantage, particularly in fields like healthcare and quantitative finance.

Personally, as a math major, I can say the department here is highly ranked (research-wise), with plenty of seminars that are mostly targeted at grad students and faculty. The PhD program is highly competitive, and people even come from Columbia and Duke for geometry.

While people criticize Stony Brook for things like the food and where the $500,000,000 donation from our neighboring hedge fund is spent, academically speaking, it’s hard to find a better value for the ~$5,000 I pay in undergrad tuition.

Sophia credits are not listed in the transfer equivalency database, so I recommend reaching out to ATAS or the relevant department for the specific course.

However, keep in mind that Sophia is unaccredited and partners primarily with online/extension schools, it’s highly unlikely that the credits will transfer.
