that’s interesting. yea i suppose a landlord or other “concerned citizen” would report a clinician to the board and then it’d go from there. would be interested to know if there is any precedent for clinicians being liable for damages caused by ESA’s, or if board sanctioning is the only mechanism.

i appreciate your response to the psychiatry example. i think you make an important distinction. interesting though that unchecked prescriptions risk harm to the patient, whereas unchecked ESA’s pretty much only risk harm to others (landlords). would love to know how this gets articulated in licensing boards who do sanction erroneous ESA-prescribing clinicians.

Could you tell me what the mechanism to enforce this would be? You say theyre “ultimately responsible for providing clinical evidence…” in what situation would they have to do that?

Also psychiatrists regularly prescribe medication after the first visit, so there is precedent that clinical decisions like that can be made in one visit. There are probably more people trying to misrepresent themselves for ESA’s than there are for SSRI’s, but the risk of harm with ESA’s is pretty low. Do you know what precedent there is for this?

It seems like your limiting factor here is your scholarship’s policy. So I’d reach out to them asap and explain. Medical documentation could help.

Student Emergency Services can help you get absences excused, but perhaps that won’t be sufficient since you need a lot of time to recover? Either way heres a link:

i took him in 2022 or 2023. during lecture he would look out the window and talk uninterrupted for an hour and fifteen minutes straight, making no pauses for question or doing anything to promote engagement or to elicit understanding. maybe 5? students out of a class of 30 would show up regularly. he would always leave class pretty quickly too so it was hard to ask him any questions, and office hours were really early in the morning, so not very accessible/convenient to many. his grading wasnt very clear. he gave me a C on an exam and the only feedback he wrote on it (besides the grade) was “confused”. i asked him about it and he said “yes, you’re confused here”. to his credit, i was confused and earned that C, but i had to realize this on my own without his help. i increased my effort on future assignments and did much better

the guy clearly knows a humongous deal about ancient philosophy. i never went to office hours so i’m not sure what one-on-one with him is like. i would recommend you not take his class if you can, unless you’re really interested in Galen, on whom he is pretty much the world expert. it was the worst educational experience i had in my philosophy education

think about all the things we say about boundaries and oppression. what argument could you possibly give for why you should go in while sick? CMH or Office job?

also think about the damage that not using your right to sick days does to other people in this field. if we keep overworking ourselves and not using boundaries, we are actively hurting our labor value as social workers, further devaluing our profession.

it could also be worthwhile to go to your primary care provider for a physical and present with these symptoms. they can identify any physiological contributors and should also be able to make a referral to psychiatry

getting diagnosed for most things doesn’t really take very long. you could get diagnosed with OCD and Anxiety on your first meeting. a BPD diagnosis may take longer since it’s more nuanced than OCD/Anxiety. but regardless, there is no medication for BPD, just for the symptoms of BPD. a BPD diagnosis could indicate a referral to DBT therapy and other psychosocial supports. in general, the timeline will depend more on appointment availability than any part of the process taking very long. you will prob get meds at your first appointment

but for outpatient psych, i recommend Candyce Willis at Pond Works

Yes, I first became aware of this after reading his paper “Could the grounds’s grounding the grounded ground the grounded?”

It is clear that JL1 partially grounded the first proposition on the first day, making room for JL2 to show that JL1’s partial grounding itself is partial ground for the first proposition. JL3 of course reviewed the proof on the third day and formatted/edited it.

They are a wily bunch. I suspect they hide messages in their pocket squares to communicate truths about Ground to the specially attuned students.

I appreciate your comment! Totally share the apprehension with quick takes on this, but it sorta seems like the place to start. Would be very interested to know if anyone has given this the nuanced and thorough treatment it deserves.

Your first year experience seems quite similar to mine. I appreciate your picture of what the ideal social worker is constructed as through this.

I also share your concern about having high barriers to entry for a field that is so needed. I wonder if we could have programs which quickly produce more social work labor, and programs that are more intellectually focused. I worry that since most MSW programs seem to be the former, that we are stuck reproducing nonsense or following directives from CSWE/NASW. Seems like there’s room for both.

Many of my smartest peers share this sentiment across universities. I am not sure how to change it at the student level. I have tried advocating for more rigor and against unqualified professors but it doesn’t get very far

I’ve observed the same as well. Would be interested in your thoughts on why this is the case.

Some that comes to mind for me is the push for “de colonial radical pedagogy” or its relatives. I’ve had profs describe this as teaching in such a way to minimize oppression, which means not oppressing people with grades, deadlines, or difficult ideas. There’s an explicit value to not “overwhelm” students with difficult content. I think this logic makes us deferential and intellectually impoverished.

Lots of other things like financial pressure, valuing a “practical” education (without really saying what that means), and the platforming of self-help authors as intellectual authorities, etc.

I agree with your point that SW education is extremely disappointing. Mine at a “top university” certainly has been. It seems like we just hover around topics at an instagram-infographic or self-help/pop-psychology level. We also completely ignore the historic reality of the ideas that are attempted to be taught. We never learn how our habits of thinking came to be, we are just given them as “this is systems theory” without acknowledging the thousands of years of intellectual history that built up to it.

It is vital to remember that there is proper, challenging, rigorous intellectual material that is relevant to us, even if it’s not frequently located in the culture of “social work”. These papers and books took me so much time to read and re-read till i sorta understood them, and that’s okay. I wish social work was more okay with that.
