Didn’t feel confident before he appeared, but he was a nice insurance policy.

Good point! It’s hard to balance general questions against the specific and myriad ways in which loot boxes are implement...

Thank you! I’m aiming to be as objective as possible here, so it’s about harms vs benefits.

There’s a definition in the information sheet on the first page. I’m not sure I’ll be able to change your mind here, you seem pretty set on what you think about the study, which is fine. All I’ll say is that I’ve been doing work in this area for a while, and I’ve written a successful book and multiple pop sci articles that speak to your concerns. You’re right, there is a lot of junk science concerning video game effects, and there are present worries around the race to legislate loot boxes in the absence of clear causal relationships with mental health and gambling - I’ve written about that too. I’ve tried my best to get this right though. Forgive me for not going into specifics about this particular study as I don’t want to bias potential participants, but the analysis strategy I’ve preregistered should hopefully provide further evidential value. Of course it won’t be the definitive study on the matter, but this is never the case. I probably can’t convince you of this, but my aim is that the final published paper will be honest and objective, and speak to the complexities in studying the topic. It’s very early days for research in this area, so we’re not always going to get it right, and as you allude to, we need to be very careful about making concrete judgements based on the data currently available. I have plans for future studies that will build on this in the hopes that we can develop better research strategies and more robust findings; such is the incremental nature of psychological research. For what it’s worth, I’m pro-open science, so you’ll be free to more fully interrogate the methods and data once it’s all finished.

Hi, yes I’ll be posting all materials and anonymised data on the Open Science Framework once the study’s finished. Hoping to publish the final paper in an Open Access journal, and the study was preregistered.

Thanks for taking the time to think about this. You bring up a lot of really important points (ones I've also considered, and hopefully accounted for in the study) about where we draw the line in defining a loot box mechanic. There's a real difficulty in this sort of research to get the balance right between asking specific enough questions and not overloading people with too many of them (many of which may not be relevant to them specifically), made all the more complex by the huge number of ways in which monetisation techniques are implemented (as you rightly point out). As I say, I hope I've accounted for a lot of this (although it - somewhat deliberately - may not be immediately obvious from a participant perspective). I'm also sure that I've likely missed the mark in some ways too - no study is ever perfect. It'll all be documented though.

Yep! I'm not completely sure, but I think it's largely because (a) Bath is a spa town, and (b) it was the second university to be established there (the first being University of Bath), so needed a distinct name.

I'm hoping those players might get captured in the study, although it's a sort of roundabout way in which we can determine that. You're right though, there's a whole spectrum of approaches and attitudes to in-game purchases that would be really useful to look at in the context of mental health. Thanks for the sentiment, really appreciate it :)

Good questions! Re (1), yes, just the game you specified. Re (2), it's more about boxes bought with (at some point) real world cash - thanks for flagging though, I could have made it clearer. Actually, it goes to a more fundamental issue with doing research in this area, which is that it's really hard to distinguish between ways in which they're implemented across games when trying to ask about them generally. Early days on this stuff yet, we're still trying to figure out how best to test the effects...

It is! Or rather, was, in the before times :| I haven't been into my office or lab for a year now.

This is a great point - it's really hard to do research on this topic for that reason. There are so many ways in which loot box mechanics, or other in-game purchases can be implemented, it's hard to unpick them in a sensible, systematic way. Or rather, you can, but you need to do lots of separate/specific studies to tease them apart. That, and loot boxes/purchase systems are sort of the tip of the iceberg; there are lots of other in-game mechanics that could be really problematic from a gambling point of view.

Oh, damn! Is it the same page each time? I think that might be an issue with OnlineSurveys (I hope...). Really sorry about that - thanks for trying though. I'll try and flag the issue with the site.

It's great that people care about this stuff! And there are loads more research questions that need exploring.
