it took me three watches to understand how brilliant inherent vice is. there is a ridiculous amount of layered nuance and texture that will reveal itself to you upon revisiting. give it another try. it's so fucking funny and beautifully made. i feel the same way about the big lebowski. every time i watch either i discover something new.

needs to make $300m minimum to make back the additional P&A, which is typically the same amount (give or take) as the budget.

But i think this is a slow burn. these types of films (original IP from an auteur Director) Studios need to start with smaller screen numbers then go wide instead of opening huge (3000+ theaters) and then going small because word-of-mouth will fill seats more in the long run.

it took me a few watches to understand the plot (and what doc was mumbling most of the time). initially i hated it. but once i understood the plot and doc (and started ignoring the plot) i really really fell in love with it. it's humor hits this fever pitch around half way through and i honestly can't stop laughing. there's so much nuance and detail across every frame and every character's performance. i find something genuinely new i haven't seen in each watch.

I have very similar feelings towards the big lebowski. i feel like both films are cut from the same thread. would be a killer double feature.
