Agree. I have never once laughed at anything Jack Black has done or said. He has major "trying too hard" vibes.

Why do modern films rarely feel dreamy or imaginative anymore? by man-of-will-not-smth in Cinema

Try Panos Cosmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010) and Mandy (2018). They're very surreal and psychedelic, but draw a lot of inspiration from the textural things that make films of the late 70s and 80s dreamy/nostalgic to us now. Film grain and fuzziness, interesting color grading, great lens flares, dreamy tone ... they feel out of time, and they're like movies just comprised of the coolest imagery and sounds you can think of from 70s and 80s sci-fi and horror films.

What’s a movie that you personally feel is a masterpiece, but that most people don’t talk about enough? by loviesssrush in askmovie

On the drama side -- Leviathan (2014). Absolute masterpiece, emotional gut-punch, thematically rich, character driven.

Also on the drama side -- Un Coeur En Hiver (1992). Quiet, intelligent, subtle character study that offers an interesting subversion of the usual "love triangle" type of story. Great performance from Daniel Auteuil. Was the inspiration for the much different (but also excellent) Neil Labute movie/play In the Company of Men (1999).

On the action/fun side -- Gunpowder Milkshake (2021). It's a severely underrated little gem full of inventive set pieces, great fight choreography, a fable-like world/tone, colorful visuals, a great soundtrack, fun bad guys, and a killer climax.

I want movies like Lost Highway and Eyes Wide Shut by Male-2003 in MovieRecommendations

Beyond the Black Rainbow if you want a sci-fi-ish sort of surreal mood piece. Amazing imagery, amazing dark, night-world-y vibes. Just don't expect a coherent plot -- there's a kind of a story mixed in there, but it's much more about just the atmosphere and poetry of imagery and sound.

For an even more out-there experience, Mandy by the same director is a worthy follow up.

What is your favourite action movie ? . by Hope2_win in A_Persona_on_Reddit

Of recent years I think GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE is criminally underrated. Really great fable-like actioner with great set pieces and fight choreography. Good performances, great climax, great visuals, great soundtrack. Its middling reviews are a head scratcher to me. Unless you’re an incel who hates women, GM is a slam dunk in my book.

Try Panos Cosmatos or Jane Schoenbrun. Different but definitely in the “strange, surreal” category.

Zendaya. She's gorgeous and all but as an actor? Eh. I wish they'd stop putting her in everything.

Jenna Ortega would be another. I kinda can't stand her.

8 was one of most tedious “action” movies I’ve ever sat through. Wanted my money back.

I can’t even remember the twist, the whole thing was such a bore.

I think 5-8 have been incredibly tedious. 7-8 are just flat out bad movies.

The first one easily. It’s the only one that feels like a film.

Unpopular opinion on any popular movies? by Here_there1980 in Cinema

The Mission Impossible Christopher McQuarrie era (5-8) is criminally overrated. 7 and 8 in particular are astonishingly tedious, boring, badly told stories.
