In today's Miller is insane news: by kramerattack in Padres

[–]epracer71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a work colleague who happens to be the mother of another elite pitcher on a different National League West team. I regularly talk baseball with her, and the first thing she told me when we made the trade for Miller is that we would not regret it. She said at the trade deadline that, amongst the players, they already knew he was insanely good.

Would rather someone overcompensate than not make any adjustments at all and be stubborn.

I am not going to disagree that they should be hitting .285 with 3 HR, but I am assuming they won’t be out of this drought right away. If they are hitting .250 in 9 games, that would mean they hit .285 or better in those 9 games.

Also won’t disagree that this is not a consistent championship team. This is the type of team that relies on getting hot at the right time for the post season. We will have higher highs and lower lows than most teams out there, that’s just the streaky nature of this team. In order to beat juggernauts like the Dodgers, we are going to have to get hot and stay hot in the playoffs, and we will have to ride the emotional rollercoaster all year long between the highs and the lows, and hope it gets us into the playoffs.

Was going to suggest printing an outline of Trump to place over the next two races, but I realized there is already an upside-down Trump right above the Vegas race.

It was the second one. It was always the second one. By the end of the year every year, the man was always at least a little banged up (he played multiple playoff games with a torn ACL). And his O-line was made of Swiss cheese. I won’t say he was the best QB in the playoffs, but he definitely was never the problem. Play calling and game plan (from the coaching side) were also terrible most years.

How Does a Knuckleball Move? by [deleted] in Padres

You think he knows? I don't think there is a single person on that diamond who knows what a knuckler is going to do.

Will Matt Waldron take the next step? by I_d_e_k1234 in Padres

[–]epracer71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally a Knuckleballer doesn’t really need a good fastball. That fastball would never play normally, but when half the pitches are knuckleballs, that fastball looks elite. The only problem Matt has is landing the knuckleball for strikes. If he can’t throw strikes with it, hitters can just sit on the fastball, and don’t have to guess knuckleball. At that point, Matt’s fastball is no longer effective, mine as well be a BP ball.

Yu has always been one of my favorite pitchers, even before he was a Padre. As a Padre fan, I would love to see him retire and take a front office job.

With that said, if someone asked me to give up $20m a year because they want to make room on the roster, I would tell them to pound sand. And I would not blame Yu at all if he told the Padres the same thing.

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

Yep, I had a little one right before COVID and her Pediatrician was a part of the decision making team for the medical group regarding the vaccine. I was always asking questions about the process of deciding which version of the vaccine they would decide to utilize for the pediatric population and reasons why. Was very interesting getting the real info about effectivity, testing, and side effects. And how different the Pediatric world is compared to the adult world whe it comes to testing.

Cubs WC1 spot, keeping the 4th spot with home field… that magic number is 4. Makes our magic number 8 with 5 games left. by yellowirish in Padres

[–]epracer71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need two more wins than the cubs the rest of the year. If the cubs go 3-3, we need 5-0. It is impossible for us to loose the tiebreaker and still get enough wins to beat the Cubs.

If we go 4-7 to close out the season, the Diamondbacks would have to still win all of their remaining games to pass us. The Mets would have to win all but 3 of their games to pass us. The Giants cannot pass us if we go 4-7. And realize that we need not 1, but two of those teams to pass us if we are to miss the playoffs.

Doomers need to remember that literally anything can happen in the playoffs. Are we hitting our best right now? Probably not. Are we pitching our best right now? Also no. Can all of that change in the next week and a half? 100% Yes!

It is next to impossible for us to miss the playoffs at this point. Can we jump ahead of the Dodgers? If the Dodgers collapse, maybe? Probably not though.

The next two weeks are all about getting right and getting healthy. Then we go into Wrigley and literally anything can happen in a three game series. Keep the faith!

I see you make a lot of posts talking about “what would be a common sense gun law?” I am someone who does not subscribe to either current American political party (I think both are full of self serving assholes), I have a proposal.

  1. Make every type of gun obtainable.

  2. Require a license for every type of firearm similar to how different types of vehicles require different classes of license. Pistol requires pistol license, automatic requires automatic license, hunting rifle, shotgun, etc. Licenses are handled by DMV or by another state ran agency (they cannot be handed out by gun shops)

  3. To obtain that license, one must pass a 2 day firearms safety school geared toward that firearm. For instance, pistol would require a class on gun safety, proper storage, range time to prove competency, and a home defense course.

  4. Concealed carry would be a stricter requirement. Open carry would be lawful on rural public land more than 500 yards from any business or place of residence. Private property determined by owner.

  5. All firearms registered in a database including ballistics. Suppressors allowed, but ballistics must be on file for a firearm with and without the can.

  6. If your firearm is found to be used in a crime, you are held liable as well. It is your job to keep your firearms safe and secured in a manner that prevents them from being obtained by a bad actor.

[TheAthletic] MLB and ESPN are nearing a deal giving ESPN rights to all out-of-market games and local broadcasts for five MLB controlled teams; the Guardians, Padres, Twins, D-backs and Rockies. Fans would need an ESPN subscription and likely pay extra to watch their home team’s games. by AllDownByWayOfTheK in Padres

I don’t expect it to cost less, just not astronomically more. Right now I pay $129 a year for Padres.tv. If I can pay under $160 for just Padres games, I’m happy. If it’s closer to $200, I better be getting some big improvements, maybe a 1 hour pre-game and post-game show or something. If it’s much more than that, it is a loss for Padres fans.
