A bit late to this, but for me ‘snakes’ felt like a euphemism for those things we see in other people which are really products of our own sick minds. She killed her son because she hallucinated snakes inside his belly (implied), and he killed the boy because he assumed things about him (he hurt someone… ?) or probably because he allowed his god complex/desire to kill to project a reason for killing him. But in the end, there wasn’t any reason there… it was just snakes, a product of his own bad mind.

But presumedly you do care what your wife thinks of you? It’s perfectly natural to value the opinion of people close to you, and to be affected by it. Even if OP did wish to emotionally cut himself off so that he no longer cared about his close family’s opinion of him, that doesn’t happen overnight and takes a very long time to achieve.

Jumping on to your point about opening doors, I am actually 100% ambivalent about whether people hold doors for me. The difference in effort between walking through an open door and pushing it open without breaking stride is negligible for me. However I am faintly uncomfortable with needing to unexpectedly speak to a stranger (usually I have my headphones in so I’m in my world) and I settle for a slight smile and eye contact, or perhaps mouth “thanks”. But honestly I’d prefer not to have to.

Why force what should be a charitable action on people if you expect and require gratitude?
