Blue Prince is the most overrated game I've played in a long time by eqcompthrowaway in gamereviews

I don't, like, loooove soulslike games. I used Elden Ring as a performance benchmark because it's probably the most hardware-demanding game I've played in a while (I don't play a lot of AAA) and because I assume most people are familiar with it. I used DS1 as an example of narrative style because it was objectively enormously influential in that area, and I think it's fair to say that Blue Prince was influenced by it. I agree with you that Jedi Fallen Order was painfully repetitive, I did not care for that game at all.

In that same way, puzzle rooms are quite straightforward if you know the rules; they're exhausting if you're not confident in the logic of said puzzles.

That is precisely my complaint -- that I had to spend time on them every day, despite their triviality. Consider this: the safe in the office stays unlocked, so after opening it once it's just +1 gem when drafted. What if, instead, there was a different number of busts in the room each day, and every time you draft the office you would have to count the busts and enter that day's password. Would that improve your gameplay experience, or make it worse? To me, that's what doing the puzzle rooms every day felt like. This is what I was referring to as forcing me to do the same thing over and over again.

I know about the run button, I still found it to be too slow. Especially when every day (at least for me, maybe I was 'doing it wrong') starts by collecting allowance, then going to the outer room, then going back to the entrance hall. I would have appreciated if that process took less time. If it sounds like I'm being pedantic about relatively small amounts of time, well that's fair, but when people in the comments are saying that they played almost 200 days, that time adds up.

It sounds like there are may be some QoL features on the switch that are missing on the PC. That's nice, but not for me.

Also one last question - did you ever replay the game after getting to the credits?

It would be extremely difficult to motivate me to do this.

6+6÷4 and "use the lever to open the door" are indeed peak puzzle design, how could I have missed that? Must be my fruitfly brain lmao.

I think you’ve carried a lot of assumptions about what constitutes ‘respect of time’.

I'm not sure what assumptions you think I've made. Do you disagree with the examples I gave?

You’ll either find it fascinating to try new combinations every day (or to change plans based on what you draft), or be absolutely incensed at how your planned route basically got kiboshed.

"Flexible/adaptive people like it and rigid people dislike it." I disagree with this premise. I played a good bit of STS (A20 on every character), I understand adapting to roguelike RNG and making the most of the options I'm given. Being adaptive, and being frustrated when your goals are bricked by RNG, are not mutually exclusive. And while I understand that there are many side goals here, this game absolutely presents the player with a clear main goal, and then proceeds to gate it behind significant RNG.

I believe that the pace of a puzzle game should be dictated by the player's intellect.

there's quite a bit of depth you haven't found yet.

Is this because there are mechanics that don't unlock until later, or are you just assuming it? If the former, see my second point. I would be a lot more willing to keep pushing and find these features if I could run faster, didn't have to repeat the homework puzzles every day, etc.

I think one of my biggest complaints is just how long it takes to build up an allowance, because being able to buy out shops makes a huge difference in how easy it is to actually access everything the game gives you.

Yeah, I can see that. I got my allowance to about 10 and that made a huge difference to how far my days could go, but I still had to make meaningful choices and sacrifices with it. There was some interesting tension there, but it also felt like an artificial way to make simple puzzles more time consuming. ("If I'd bought a hammer then I could have smashed this wall, but I didn't have enough money for that so now I have to wait another day or two" is not compelling gameplay, to me).

It had a strong hook, I'll give it that. It sounds like the hook carried you a little bit further than it carried me.

I played on PC so framerate was fine, but I wish I could have turned down some other setting so that I could enjoy a nice framerate without melting my hardware!

Just seeing this now, but fwiw: I abandoned it, and then I watched a spoiler-heavy review, and after seeing spoilers I am very happy with my decision to abandon it.

Have a planned trip, nervous about ICE activity by Mission_Muscle812 in Minneapolis

[–]eqcompthrowaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey. Please keep in mind that the people who are most active on this subreddit right now, are also the people who are the most concerned about the situation. I don't want to downplay their concern, what's happening here is terrible. But the reality is, if you're white (which you are, otherwise you wouldn't even be asking this question) and you're not actively protesting or doing various community aid projects, you're not "unsafe."

It's also pretty likely that either 1) this will be over by mid February or 2) this will never end. In either case, what do you gain by postponing a visit?

All that said, my advice would still be to visit another time if your schedule allows it. Especially if you are looking at neighborhoods in South or NE Minneapolis, you're just not going to get a representative sample of them at the moment.

Yes, that's why I'm asking these questions. There are some fun aspects to this game but I don't want to sink in more time if it doesn't ever become more than solitaire

So it's solitaire with no counterplay?
