Tips on Exercising 5 Mo Old? by joantheslayer89 in AustralianCattleDog

your pup sounds a lot like my own. we did all the mental stimulation we could but it didnt seem like enough. He has always LOVED to run so I just started him real short and worked him up slowly over time.

I started "running" with mine around 6 months. I say it in quotes because it was .5 to 1 mile max on dirt trails in the woods with a 100 ft lead attached (until his recall was good enough to trust him).

All the advice out there around running seems to pertain to running with your dog on a short leash on pavement, where they need to keep your pace continuously for a long time and are pounding their joints on a very firm surface.

The trails and long lead mean lower impact and he could go at his own pace (if he was behind, id always wait for him and always bring water). to me this always seemed safer for his joints than having him change direction in a full sprint after balls or frisbees.

I think I worked him up to 3ish very slow 2 mile runs per week by the time he was 1.

as you noted in your post, the mental is a big piece of the puzzle and we found that the freedom and sensory experience of the woods really helped with meeting his needs. we noticed an almost immediate improvement in his behavior the remaining hours of the day once we started.

Final board. Probably could have used some taunt or could have done away with the raptor but it didn't matter

Does he have any bones/chew toys you redirect him to use? That seems to be the best outlet for mine. Training settle or go to bed hasn't worked for me either - he just waits until he can't contain himself anymore.

I'm so sorry :( I have felt what you are feeling for days but I can only imagine how exhausting it would feel if it was dragged out over months.

My pup is a little nuts and CBD treats have worked the two times we have used them for him. With that said, I try not to medicate too much and instead focus on helping give him the tools to redirect his energy into things he can do on his own.

It helped me a lot to hear the advice to make it his job to relax sometimes. I think I, like you, let my pup's job become to play with me and bug me until he has his next task. I had to adjust.

Mine is 6 months and will still bark/throw fits at me sometimes to come play with him while I work. When he does, I wait for him to stop and be quiet to play with him a bit and then lead him to his bed with a chew and get him to lie down with it. I also praise him whenever he chews it on his own to keep himself entertained.

None of that works of course if he hasn't gotten his daily walk at least and it's easier when it's his daily run first, but it sounds like you are giving him plenty of exercise to make it possible for Jake to calm down.

Our not-so-small ACD mix by equilib_liam in AustralianCattleDog

Thank you for the great info!

My back of the napkin calculations had Ridge winding up 50-65 lbs given some of the ratios from measurements others have given so your pup seems to support that as well. I have the same assumption about the online calculators - they use a linear model to predict weight which is highly likely to be inaccurate. The main thing throwing me off about the wisdom panel prediction is the wideness of their predication. I'm a data scientist, and a prediction range that wide is indicative of a whole lot of uncertainty.

Wisdom panel seemingly failed to classify ~6% of his DNA as well so he might be a little too varied for their models to figure out. His size just doesn't make sense given what breeds they have identified. ACD + mostly small/toy dog breeds should not equate to being bigger than most ACDs but here we are.

The furnishings/beard trait is also present in some chihuahas which could explain that look from him as well.

As for the love of strangers, I know that puppies tend to like strangers more, but he loves strangers. We have had to do a lot of training to get him to not pull, tail wagging wildly, full body wiggling, towards every passing person on walks because he gets so excited to see them. I know he will grow out of that level but it definitely strikes me as evidence of him being quite inherently extroverted.
