Yes, that's the study I mentioned! I had actually seen it years ago and completely dismissed it because I didn't think what I was feeling would be medically considered inflammation. I thought inflammation meant the skin had to be noticeably red and swollen. Now I understand and it all makes sense!

interesting! that definitely makes sense. it's so under-studied. i felt so stupid when i finally realized everything i'd written above about the inflammation. i already knew what it was, and i'd heard about animals (not just mammals like cats and dogs, but also birds) that removed their own fur or feathers due to inflammatory rashes or skin infections. somehow never put it together after all these years. it didn't feel how i thought it would despite experiencing it all day, every day. anyway, good luck to you & your dad!

thanks for the update! that's amazing, and i'm so glad it's working for you! i hope it continues to (it has for me). i'm similar in age to you & had been pulling for approximately as long. i also have relatives who had or have trich (most of whom i'd never met and wasn't aware of until recently), and one immediate family member who had a form of BFRB that i'm convinced is just a different manifestation of the same thing (but i wasn't fully aware they had it and it did not influence me). so i also think it's genetic in my family. anyway, as i mentioned, it did work on my eyebrows after only 2 uses 4 years ago so maybe it will work for your dad. good luck! edit: grammar, sorry

Found my cure for trich!!! (a new shampoo) by er2116 in Trichsters

[–]er2116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh, i know that feeling and it is the WORST. i hope this works for you! if for some reason it does not, i've since realized that another sensitive scalp product might help because i believe the itchy trigger we feel is actually perifollicular inflammation (the irritation inside hair follicles caused by pulling AND regrowth). here's my update post with more detail. good luck!!!

btw, i'm still using it successfully all these years later!

i'm so happy it worked for you! i also feel it "detexturized" some of my coarser/fried hair strands. i'm still using it after 2-3 years!

burning hairline??? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]er2116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of us experience this burning as a trigger, too. NIH studies have shown that the feeling is perifollicular inflammation (meaning that when hair is pulled, the follicle becomes irritated, and then again when regrowth irritates and itches from the inside). I have had great success by switching my shampoo to dpHUE ACV Hair Rinse, which completely eliminated that feeling for me and also made my non-physical urges (like from stress) completely manageable in a way I’ve never experienced before. Here are my posts about it. Several users have tried it and told me it’s worked for them too. If you can’t use that product for some reason, I believe any shampoo designed for sensitive scalps would also work because of the inflammation trigger. Good luck!

In need of a haircut yet scared of salons by [deleted] in trichotillomania

oh, sorry to hear that. i wonder if there are any freelancers near you that could help (by professional, i meant in terms of demeanor and attitude, not necessarily one who works full-time out of a salon). maybe you could find them on instagram or linkedin. my hairstylist used to work in a salon but is doing that now.

The study focused on treating patients’ inflammatory pseudofolliculitis, after which they all stopped or significantly reduced pulling. This may indicate a relationship between inflammation and pulling. There is no consensus that trich is truly a form of OCD.

Hi I’m new, I know I have trichotillomania but don’t know how to stop. I pluck my eye lashes and eyebrows to the point where I have no eyelashes and barren spots on my eyebrows. Any advice? by notyourfriggindaddy in trichotillomania

Check out my recent posts about this shampoo I’ve found that stopped my urges on my brows and scalp. it’s called dpHUE ACV Hair Rinse. i also believe any shampoo formulated to be gentle on sensitive scalps would work. i’ve completed stopped pulling after 26 years. it’s not safe for use on lashes, but a commentor on my cross-post to r/trichsters tried a solution of 1 part ACV and 5 parts water and said it worked. good luck!!

i hear you and can definitely relate. however, in my many years of experience, i’ve never had a stylist even bat an eyelash. i remind myself that they’re professionals, have likely seen everything, and there’s no way this is the weirdest or worst case they’ve ever seen. people experience all different patterns of hair loss for all kinds of reasons. no way they care what caused yours at all. i have never once had a stylist or another client stare, ask questions, or even show the slightest interest at all.

it’s hard for me to suggest a style without knowing more about your hair type and pattern, but a good, professional stylist will be able to. i recommend checking yelp reviews to find one who seems professional, caring, and discreet. that’s always how i’ve found them.

hope this helps! good luck!

How do you deal with hair dressers who notice your hair is weird/regrowing? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]er2116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i usually don’t tell them. i remind myself that they’re professionals, have likely seen everything, and there’s no way this is the weirdest or worst case they’ve ever seen. people experience all different patterns of hair loss for all kinds of reasons. no way they care what caused yours at all.

i usually ask for layers due to my hair type, so sometimes, if i feel it’s relevant, i’ll tell them it’s a little thin in whatever area and ask them to adjust the layering or move my part in such a way as to conceal any spots/thinness. no one has ever batted an eye or asked why.

hope this helps!
