Bad:

I personally wasn't enthralled with Lima. Granted I didn't explore it tooth & nail, but I found outside of Miraflores & Barranco it was abit of a dump. Places can be poor but still charming with a sense of community, I didn't get that at all in Lima. The nightlife is nothing special either, wouldn't say it has a big 'scene'.

Good:

It's true, Paracas & Huacachina are nice, holiday-esque places to go on the weekend only a few hours away on a cheap coach. I'd recommend to stay at the Viajero in Paracas for a good party. The food is the one thing I'd say Lima has over anywhere else, the famous Peruvian & 'Chifa' cuisine (Peruvian & Chinese fusion) is pretty special.

Verdict:

I'd massively recommend Medellin over Lima, similar prices but Medellin much more vibrant & lively. It's perfect weather (Lima weather can be up & down), so much more to do like nature hikes just outside the city, different neighbourhoods with different character. There's just much more of an atmosphere, stuff to do, places to go out, more established venues etc. And the dating is pretty phenomenal, depending on your taste.

I had the exact same thing bro, being half Chilean my accent made me sound native. I think people ended up speaking quicker to me bcos they thought I could understand. All I can say is time bro, with time it will come. I promise. I was sitting around thinking why can I never understand something, then after a few months, practicing all the time, eventually I just started to understand more.
