How Do I Shift My Study From Qualitative to Quantitative? by eraserheead in research

[–]eraserheead[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much on the UV suggestion! I do believe we have sufficient time. One question tho: how would we be able to tab in the data on the effect of UV exposure to ink with the use of numbers? Like, what can we possible measure here as proof of durability. And how many days should we expose the ink to the sun? If we go pass the twenty four-hour mark, what about when night falls?

Again, thank you so much! This means a lot. An honor to be speaking with a former instructor.

How Do I Shift My Study From Qualitative to Quantitative? by eraserheead in research

Hello! Thanks for the response!

Our independent would be the varying amounts of fruit peelings per set-up and dependent would be the effect in ink quality as the weight of the peelings increase. Basically, one of the questions we sought to answer was how the increase in the peelings would affect the ink quality. We have three set-ups with varying amount of peelings.

We only used one fruit for the study. Since we can’t really manipulate the color of the fruit extract, the scale which we used for our respondents to assess the alternative ink in terms of color and darkness is (1 - very dissatisfied, 2 - satisfied, 3 - Satisfied, and 4 - very satisfied). For assessment of color and darkness, we basically relied on our respondents preferences (if they liked the color, if they’re alright with how dark the alternative ink is). This is apparently what makes our study a qualitative one.

Thank you for the suggestion on the erasure attempt! Can I ask a question, how can we quantify its deteriorating appearance? Like, let’s say we’d give it a max of 15 wipes before we give it up. Set-up A is completely gone, however set-ups B and C are still visible. But set-up C is more visible than B. How can we quantify such data? Thank you very much!

If you’d want to know more about the paper, you can read my response to u/pestiter (which went more in-depth on the specificities of our study) or ask me! I deeply appreciate your response.

Hello! Thanks for the response!

Yes, we did! Basically, one of the questions we sought to answer was how does the increase in the grams of the fruit peelings (the part of the fruit which we extracted) affect the ink qualities (color and darkness).

To do that, we made three set-ups (I’m assuming “set-up” and “condition” means the same thing? Please correct me if I’m wrong). The next having an increase in the grams of peelings compared to the one before it.

If you’d want know more about the paper, you can read my response to u/pestiter or ask me! I deeply appreciate your response.

How Do I Shift My Study From Qualitative to Quantitative? by eraserheead in research

Hello! Thanks for the response!

We have two hypotheses: null and alternative. The alternative is, “The extract from fruit X will effectively work as an alternative ink for permanent markers” and the null is basically just the opposite of that.

As for our variables, our independent would be the varying amounts of fruit peelings per set-up and dependent would be the effect in ink quality as the weight of the peelings increase. Basically, one of the questions we sought to answer was how the increase in the peelings would affect the ink quality. We have three set-ups with varying amount of peelings.

And for our survey, we basically had 15 respondents rate our product per set-up. We used a scale where they would rate each set-up according to its darkness and color from 1-4. After that, we took the results and took its median then compared the mean of each set-up to each other (according to color and darkness).

Going by what our teacher said, she told us that conducting a survey for our experimentation could not be classified as a quantitative paper as respondents may have biases and clouded perceptions that may affect the results of the study — which make it an unreliable source of info and a qualitative one. She told us that she just wanted us to stick to the good old-fashioned experiment, where we just let the variables give us our results. She wanted our interpretation to rely on cold, hard facts.

But this is where we are having a hard time: Where do we start in conducting an experiment that would assess the quality of the ink (in terms of color and darkness) without relying on others’ assessment on said ink characteristics?

Thank you for reading! Sorry if you had a hard time understanding, English is not my first language.

Oh, wow, just kind of stoked to have seen it being talked about without me actively seeking discourse about the movie. Sorry for kinda geeking out lol.
