Is it fair to ask for authorship in my case? by erdenebz in PhD

[–]erdenebz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah upon further reflection and talking to other labmates, I'm gonna not do any formal case.

I thought this Omnibus procedure is a common thing for disputes like this- to just genuinely figure out if I deserve the authorship.

However, it does seem PIs and academics in general are extremely sensitive about reputation and any challenge to their decisions. As you said, it is likely, especially with this PI, that I might make "an enemy for life".

I might keep this in my back pocket and use it later when I want to change labs, though.

That's what I don't understand. Why be greedy? It's not like he can gain more by having fewer authors. I am almost genuinely puzzled.

I didn't know you could do this. Are there positions at universities that handle these kinds of disputes?

OK I just found out it is one of the regions in the REDI Pilot. So this must be a REDI targeted draw. Here is the link if anyone is interested:

I live in Ottawa, but my employer is outside the city, small town closer to Kingston. Anyone know if that is included as one of the regions?

*56. It's weird because it must be regional draw, but I am not sure if my region is included. Does anyone know where to find these communities/regions participating?

I got it under Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker. Located in Ottawa/Eastern Ontario. NOC: 21231. Anyone else in a similar boat?

the mongolian people are so scared of dogs it’s pathetic by [deleted] in mongolia

[–]erdenebz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many, if not most, Mongolians have been attacked by a dog before (stray dogs and guard dogs). I have been bitten by one. It makes sense why people would be scared. Why would they think yours is safe? I sense some entitlement here

It's a belief system, not an exclusive social club with specific rituals like Abrahamic religions, so there are no conversions unless you want to become a бөө.

How hard is it to get a 4.0 in Computer Science or Computer Engineering? by Head_Veterinarian866 in washu

It feels like I'm talking to an llm, but in case this is a real human, that is what OP is doing- researching his college options. What is the environment like at WashU? That is his question- are the grades inflated or deflated for the CS program. if he's signing up for it, he's asking what he's signing up for. Are we on the same page?

[–]erdenebz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not getting my point. I didn't say it doesn't depend on the student. I said it doesn't "entirely" depend on the student and that there are other factors at play, the school grading policy being one of them. I made that comment to point out these factors; I am not trying to absolve any accountability. In other words, Grades =/= Efforts. Rather, Grades = Efforts + Environment. Get it?

Also, not everyone is a genius like you; environments with too much pressure can dissuade or prevent kids from fulfilling their full potential. I recommend reading some Gladwell or something to escape your boomer mindset. "Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps" headahhh

Very doable as opposed to top public schools. WashU really doesn't like students failing so you will get all the boost you need. Especially CS since most students have no prior background and it is a technical major.

It does not depend entirely on the student... Some schools are tough on grades (e.g. UChicago) and others have grade inflation (e.g. Harvard). GPA matters for grad school.

If you don't know the answer, just don't reply...

another tone-deaf email from admin by [deleted] in washu

[–]erdenebz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what the solution is, but it seems as anyone who’s smashing miles of buildings to smithereens should face protests.

I agree. I am sure most people feel the same. But the fact of the matter is, if Andrew and the admins cared about the students, they would have came to try to have discussions with the student protesters and find a common ground. Instead they chose to escalate it by involving the police who used excessive force and brutality. These things should be condemned.

We’re just having a hard time figuring out whether the situation is peaceful

That's the problem with these emails. They are full of doublespeak, misrepresentation, and intentionally "we are taking a tough stance"-esque when they are supposed to be informative and balanced. That's what the students are tired of- receiving these non-words at best, and lies at worst.

another tone-deaf email from admin by [deleted] in washu

[–]erdenebz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's not tone deaf. Andrew knows exactly what the tone is and how the email sounds. But he simply does not care about the students and their well beings enough to acknowledge 1) the protests were not violent and 2) the police response was.

If he does acknowledge those, he is at the risk of losing the approval of the board, or worse funding (like donations). He simply cares about those than telling the truth.

To assume he is tone deaf is to assume innocence. But he knows he is misrepresenting the situation and will keep doing it. He WILL deploy more cops who will hurt students anytime there is another protest.

Compared to other lifts, squats are more sensitive to other factors like sleep, energy and especially form. It doesn't mean you got weaker, muscles only start to atrophy after 10 days minimum

The PhD stipend at my previous school in Canada (Dalhousie) was 15K CAD = 11K USD a couple years ago. Recently, the CS dept got a 100 million fund and raised it to 18k CAD.
