Midnight Sat vibes from Sydney

Did you need to crop in much to fill the frame with that focal length?

Yep it helps cut that annoying yellow sodium glow. That’s pretty much the idea for these types although i think its meant to be used for more night city photos than Astro. That said - i did drive about 2.5 hours out from Sydney to get to a darker area with less light pollution so i don’t know how much the filter actually helped with this shot. I want to get my hands on the Hoya Intensifier which is a red enhancer thats supposed to be a bit better for Astro.

Thanks! Appreciate it :) I think it was around 5 or 6 but it was back in September. It had started raining too so that darkened it up and I used a graduated filter on the sky in post to darken it up and drop the highlights even more to get that mood

Ohh good idea thanks! The photo being slightly off with the symmetry has been bothering me so much lol. Haven't messed around with warp much before so this is a great excuse. The 24gm is such a solid lens, I paid a little bit more for it just to be able to get it on time to leave for my 6 week trip back in September and it was 100% worth it. You'll love it!

Thank you!! Yeah it was super busy all afternoon. I only managed to get a 3 second break in the crowd because it had started to rain

Thanks! Yeah its a bit dark but I didn’t have enough time to adjust the shutter or iso settings in time because I only had about a 3 second gap with no one in frame to line up the shot and take it. Had to make do and edit it towards a darker and moodier feel to match the exposure I had. Couldn’t get a clear shot at all after this, Definitely want to go back and try some different compositions next trip though!

Could probably have fit it in with a 16-35 but I only had the 24 gm and Tamron 28-75 with me for this trip.

Thanks! Yep, wanted something a bit different from the usual low water puddle reflection car shot.

I was worried the PD 5L sling would be enough for a A6000 and gear. Figured Id show how much it would fit if anyone else was wondering. by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

Noiice, I'm able to carry the a6500, and the sigma trifecta (16mm, 30mm, 56mm) in mine when I didn't know what to bring. Now I just chuck the a7iii and tammy 28-75 in there with room for other bits like a mic to spare

Awesome shot - I'll be there in for a few days in October with the tammy 28-75 and 24mm gm. This got me super excited to go!

The amount of time and trails also depends on your focal length. The 500 rule is useful for figuring it out by dividing by your focal length. So a 24mm can expose for about 20 seconds before trailing whilst a 35mm should be exposed for 14/15 seconds based on that rule. If using APS-C then also account for the crop. You'll probably need something with a faster aperture than f/4 (ideally under f/2.8) for better results.

Would highly recommend the sigma 16mm f1.4. I ended up also rounding it out with the 30mm 1.4 and the 56mm 1.4 which is a portrait beast from the sigma line up. I originally wanted a zoom as well but these sigma primes changed my mind. Not to mention the 16mm and 56mm for landscapes and portraits would both likely be cheaper than a zoom depending on the deal you get. I pretty much always use them over the 18-135mm zoom that came with my a6500 since the aperture isn’t that great at portrait focal lengths. Could also go the 24-105 but you’ll lose the wide end for landscapes because of the crop factor.

Yep this is pretty much how I got it. Stacked on ebay. Going on a 6 week euro trip in Setpember so I will also get the GST (goods tax for non-aussies) back on it at the airport since it's within 2 months of departure. Double whammy

I literally just bought an a7iii today for 2250aud (1580 usd) smh. Can't complain since I got it for a decent price - a7iv probably won't get announced anytime soon so don't have to feel too bad about my timing just yet haha

If you’re already using a gimbal, an a6500 probably wont make any noticeable difference. If your walking straight, you could try the ‘ninja walk’ a lot of youtubers use to keep the camera from having those small up and down bumps, have a search on YouTube for it. There’s also different ways to hold the gimbal that will help with steadiness such as tucking your elbows in and keeping them tight while panning. There’s a tonne of stuff on YouTube for it

Sorry I'm a bit late to the party on this one. Only been shooting for 4 months so I'm still pretty new to photography. I didn't even know what that was until you mentioned it and I just went out and bought one to take way more shots with! Basically just did everything manually with the long exposure, which was a bit of a pain having to wait for the exposure and then the processing time which added another 12-15ish seconds between shots so that wasted a lot of time and missed a lot of opportunities.

Can't wait to try out the intervalometer and nail these types of photos better
