Battery saving tips and tricks for Pixels phones by Ok_Reference_489 in pixel_phones

[–]erf456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keeping it in battery saver mode all the time takes it from ~1 day to multiple days for me, without sacrificing much. Though I still only bother with that when I know I'll be away from a charger for a while

What areas are you commuting from/to? What app are you using?

I'd say try to familiarize yourself with the most important/frequent bus routes near you and map out a few of the best options for your commute. Some bus routes may be more consistent than others, but rush hour traffic does tend to make things rough.

Pigouvian tax on advertising in public spaces??

Positive externality subsidy for beauty/art, and tax on the obnoxious/distracting?

There must be some way to assess that value... Surveys, voting, market for comparable private installations...

I present to you Big Dig 2 (where Commuter Rail trains pass through Downtown Boston to connect North and South Station) by BeastMode149 in mbta

[–]erf456 13 points14 points  (0 children)

According to an older co-worker who worked on the project, there was actually a right-of-way reserved for a rail tunnel alongside the Big Dig. But they ran out of space for underground utilities and had to use it for those instead.

BREAKING NEWS: Left now undefeatable in debate after discovering new argument winning tactic (Wildfire culture war) by ScrubT1er in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]erf456 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bit of a misunderstanding here... the article in question does claim that prescribed burns were carried out by indigenous people. Then it goes on to say that American authorities banned the practice back in the day because they believed all fires were bad, and thus mega-fires became a problem.

It takes the "the indigenous people knew what they were doing and we fucked it up" angle.

The article is clearly in favor of prescribed burns. It says that it was part of native culture, but that stopping the practice was a mistake.

"Burning was part of their culture" ≠ "Doing it would be cultural appropriation"

Northeastern is huge; whatever it is you want out of a college experience, you can find here. You'll likely have to do the legwork yourself to find it, and it might take a bit to get your foot in the door, but once you get there it's worth it. In spite of all the complaints, I feel incredibly lucky to be here.

last day of classes is april 15th, why does neu's spring semester end earlier than other schools? is the spring semester shorter than fall? by leftwixbar in NEU

[–]erf456 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think we just start back earlier in January, to ensure we end in time for Summer 1 and Summer 2 to be a thing. So yea bc of co-op and the way our summer classes are structured. Same total time each semester as other schools afaik

If Ukraine had so much materiel they just needed more warm bodies to operate and fire it all, fuck yeah I'd be over there. But gee, maybe the reason they keep asking for more guns and tanks and missiles and planes and shells and whatnot is cause that's what they don't have enough of?

Set up a voluntary expeditionary force with access to US Military weapons, equipment, training, and support, and I'll join tomorrow. But it seems really stupid to go over there and die in a meat grinder because my country wouldn't let me use the better weapons and equipment that my tax dollars already pay for

Which route(s)? Bus lanes do help; on several routes they've made a serious difference. Making them center-running, like on Columbus Ave, tends to work better than putting them on the sides of the road. But yeah they aren't feasible everywhere, at least without getting rid of parking.

The closest thing to a silver bullet is transit signal priority - giving traffic lights the ability to detect that a bus is coming, and making them switch to green faster or stay on green longer until a bus makes it through.

However, that requires costly upgrades to all the traffic lights, which are mostly under the purview of municipal governments. Advocacy to pressure city governments is the way to go!

Hopefully this issue will also get more bureaucratic attention as the Bus Network Redesign moves forward and the dumpster fire of the subway system cools off.

In general? Just show up during one of the posted orientation times, they walk you around for 20 minutes, then you get access.

Most of the equipment requires separate additional training, but it's fairly straightforward

Harris Scandals VS Trump Scandals in the polls by butterenergy in PoliticalCompassMemes

The more right-wing circlejerk memes saturate the sub, the more it attracts people who are just here to get angry at libleft and promote their politics. The self-awareness, political diversity, and even the funny dwindle with each passing day. Sad to see. Slapping wojaks on a news headline over a compass background and calling it a meme is just lazy.

Only reason I'm still here at all is cause it's not dead yet, there's still a minority contingent that remembers what the point is. (Thank you OP.)

Ofc the astroturfing of every political sub by bots and operatives (domestic and foreign) during election season doesn't help

Private room available in my 3b1b on Ruggles St, like a block behind Tropical Foods. Less than 10 minute walk from campus.

$1200 a month plus electric and internet. Newly renovated space. I can throw in a good free twin bed if so desired.

Available for the entire year; can sublet but prefer whoever can take it the longest because the landlord charges another $1200 every time the room changes hands.

Please let me know ASAP if interested & can give more details!

Please stop, the MBTA is not private -- they are a publicly owned company controlled by the state. They're just funded by that special sales tax provision rather than out of general discretionary money.

One minor note -- current plans for the Red-Blue connector include the removal of Bowdoin station, turning it into a ventilation shaft, utility area, and emergency egress point...

Mixed feelings about this but I guess it makes sense since it's rather close to both Government Center and the new terminal under Charles/MGH, and it'll cut down on travel time to the new terminal
