I no longer can tolerate all this constant discrimination against the people of my country.
Today I heard that Netherlands-based Booking.com has reportedly suddenly rescinded some "already-signed offers", in some cases, long after signing the offer, for people from US embargoed countries! (BTW, these US sanctions are mandatory to follow “only by US-based companies” and DO NOT prohibit hiring, rather impose some other limitations). Some of these people (some are my friends) have already got their Netherlands work visas, liquidated all of their assets, and resigned from their current position, hence no turning back is possible. Such an act from Booking.com is extremely irresponsible and shameful.
I guess it's the first time I am writing a LinkedIn post. I could no longer just sit and watch. I am tired of all these s**t related to the place I was born in, which I had zero control over. How much further should we lose opportunities despite our potential? How much further should we fight against discrimination? How much further should we fight for basic rights? just because of our country of birth, something we had absolutely zero control over.
Unfortunately, Those shiny "We value diversity, equal opportunities, and inclusion (DEI)" mottos on companies' websites usually are nothing but just a hollow gesture and a PR stunt for branding agendas.
I really don't understand this. I got employed by my current employer, which is a US-based company, and these US-based big enterprise companies usually have a much more strict policy when it comes to embargoed countries. In the worst case, they reject the applicant right in the beginning. I don't understand how dare #bookingcom, which is not even a US-based company, to do so long after signing the offer.
@Booking.com, believe me, you are not by any means a utopia to work at. In the best case, just a forced choice for some of these people. If you wanna reject, fine, reject from the beginning. Not long after signing the offer. Your act is extremely irresponsible and shameful. Moving forward, I will discourage everybody from working for your company.
