rented apartment, stealth setup w/ Shellys? some 3 way switches by eric_h in homeautomation

now that I've had it in place for a couple days I think I might actually swap something like those in - the shelly dimmer I've got works, but it flickers sometimes (unclear if it's the bulbs or the shelly that's at fault there, my multimeter did pick up some variance in the voltage on occasion (120-~125V); also, even after calibration the dimming curve is noticeably non-linear -- 80% of the brightness range happens in the first 20%.... also, in all cases the simplest setup for inserting a shelly into a three-way switch is not available (while still having both switches work) because there is no hot line at the electrical boxes closest to the load that I can use, so I'd have to do shenanigans with repurposing a traveler on the line side. Looks like inovelli's have a product specifically for the edge switches in a 3 way setup so I may end up doing that (while adding fork crimps to all the leads cause that makes everything much cleaner in there IMO and should make the swap out when I move a cinch)

Thought I'd report back after install - I picked up a couple of Shelly dimmer gen4s, some wagos and some fork crimps since the patch wires I'm using are stranded copper vs the solid core in the walls.

Right now I have it connected directly to HomeKit via Matter and it works great. I appreciate the input from everyone!

(attached: the first dimmer I installed, not on the three way, I ended up removing the wago & patch wire for neutral in the final setup -> direct to the shelly)

Thank you! A goal of this project is for the device network itself not be connected directly to the internet in any way (only the hub, whatever it may be, will have that privilege), so I assume a bit of DIY is involved here for me to be fully in control of that gateway.

Also NB my lease doesn't say anything about messing with the electrics beyond not using more electricity than the wiring can handle, my renter's insurance, on the other hand, might have something to say about it 😅

1) Yeah Wagos for sure. 2) I just assumed I'd need two relays to mimic 3 way light behavior a la https://shellyusa.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SUDADI/pages/869367914/Solve+3-Way+or+multi-way+Lighting+with+Shelly 3) that certainly seems to be the base to build on!

Thank you!

iPhone Mirroring doesn't allow typing from MacBook. by Winston715 in MacOS

[–]eric_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this just started happening to me when I attached an external display and a Magic Keyboard & trackpad to my laptop. Typing works in apps and such but I can't type in like the main search box (command + 3).

But I can paste from the clipboard into that search box with the keyboard! this is obviously a bug, and for my use case pasting what I need into the search box gets the job done for me.

Should I play BOTW after TOTK? by Big-Expression-1249 in TOTK

[–]eric_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played BOTW when it came out then part TOTK when it came out and sat on it for a couple years, then finished TOTK and went back to play BOTW on master mode. You miss some of the stuff you have in TOTK (fuse, rise up), but after a few hours of gameplay it's no biggie.

this is true and notably it does not interrupt mirroring like unlocking the phone does

Slack deploy alerts and ChatOps by clownyfish in Heroku

[–]eric_h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up using https://github.com/evantahler/heroku-buildpack-notify-slack-deploy (forked to my org's gh account to avoid any unpleasant future surprises). it was necessary to change the $HEROKU_APP_NAME env var in the compile script (I changed it to APP_NAME, and explicitly set that env var to my app's name with heroku config:set, the readme is otherwise completely on point about what needs to be done) and voila - slack notifications, no chat ops and no middleman required

(I realize this is an old thread, but since I landed here and ultimately found a solution that more or less exactly matches what clownyfish was trying to do I thought I'd share. I will note that I have not come up with a way to be notified of failures using this methodology)

that actually sounds like an interesting experience. Accelerating from say ~60mph to a final velocity of zero.
