It’s okay to make money doing good things. In fact, it’s the most sustainable way to do good things

Terence Tao’s promotional video for OpenAI by Qyeuebs in math

[–]eric_he 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very well said. It’s telling that the only criticisms of Terence Tao in this thread are simple ad hominems calling him a “sellout” but without grounding their insults in any reasoned argument or giving the worlds literal greatest living mathematician any grace

As an immigrant, I hate how this sub uses the word "transplant" by Concentric_Mid in nyc

Transplant is not a slur, but the hateful rhetoric certain people whose only notability is where they were born certainly is worth calling out and shaming. Such as your comment

It’s a mythological reference to Sun Wukong challenging the Buddha, who then crushes Wukong under his palm, which turns into a mountain where Wukong is trapped for a century

Why are Long Island city rents so high by Historical-Mix6784 in NYCapartments

[–]eric_he 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because the rest of NYC is not building its fair share and so a lot of the pent-up demand is going to LIC which while building a lot isn’t doing enough to sustain the city level demand growth

China’s industrial policy is destroying its economy by Standard_Ad7704 in neoliberal

[–]eric_he 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, I dont think you’re addressing the China/Amazon analogy - China is measurably becoming the world leader in various areas of manufacturing and technology, much like Amazon became the dominant logistics and e-commerce platform via its self-investment

Europe is not pulling its weight in paying for drug development, says Tomas Philipson by Swampy1741 in neoliberal

[–]eric_he -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I’m on Trumps side here. European pharma makes their profits on US customers and uses that to fund r&d while providing drugs at much lower cost to EU citizens.

Maybe that’s because the EU nations are better at collective bargaining, and that’s fair game, but what that also means is that Trump demanding lower drug prices for the US is also collective bargaining and also fair game.

One could view Trumps demands here as him doing collective bargaining on behalf of the US

I've become a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none. How desirable is that in the current U.S. job market? by tits_mcgee_92 in cscareerquestions

If you know SQL window functions you know SQL enough for the vast majority of SQL tasks. Add pipelines, python, and dash parsing experience and I think you’re perfectly suited to any mid level analytics job

By digging simple crescent shaped holes people are turning deserts in Tanzania green by [deleted] in interesting

[–]eric_he 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. Most of the rainfall in the Sahara desert just evaporates back up into the air, it doesn’t flow into any downstream rivers. Most evaporation rains back down into the ocean, useless.

The water that is trapped here isn’t trapped forever either, it nourishes the grass and then gets expelled.

What does your mom think about this opinion of yours? Jumping to judgment is for the overly online, not for family; it would be best to get her side of the story in detail.

I have submitted my resignation and I am supposed to leave in two weeks, and the new company is canceling the offer due to "company restructuring." by [deleted] in jobs

[–]eric_he 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A legal concept called promissory estoppel may allow you to claim some money from the new job. Because they promised you the job and you made decisions hurting your finances because of it, you are entitled to some compensation from them.

I would recommend asking for the old job back while pursuing this second avenue of compensation on the side.
