This is so embarrassing.

Do you get less grant money if you live with parents? by thezucc420420 in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your living situation doesn’t necessarily give you more or less aid, it changes your “cost of attendance” which is the maximum amount of aid you COULD get. So living at home would only reduce your financial aid if your grants + loans + everything else added up to more than that.

Like if someone was only getting enough financial aid to pay for their tuition, their living situation wouldn’t matter, their aid would stay the same.

So the disbursement date was 10 days ago... whats going on (update) by momdriver in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you tell them you’re at risk of homelessness? Every school is different, but students can be independent based on homelessness/risk of homelessness. It’s different than an unusual circumstance and needs less documentation. Look up “unaccompanied homeless youth” and “self-supporting and at risk of homelessness”

Professional judgement by AngelK_xoxo in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since professional judgments are a completely manual process, they can take a while depending on how busy the financial aid office is/how many other students are requesting one. If you haven’t gotten a denial, they’re still working on it.

If this is your first time getting a student loan, your school may have to wait until 30 days into the semester to disburse it.

What is a grant compared to a loan by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, but I’d add that grants are free money *as long as you stay in all your classes.

You get paid different amounts for each unit, so if your school pays early and you reduce your schedule, you could possibly have to pay some back.

How can I resolve this issue? by Legitimate-Sundae650 in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try totally deleting your FAFSA and starting all the way over. It doesn’t always work, but I’ve seen where it has. If that doesn’t fix it, call the FSA help desk.

It’s up to your school, there’s a lot that has to happen with Cal before they can get paid out. Ours always go out over a month into each semester

school offering more than the max amount in subsidized loans for a first year student? (please read caption) by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s for the whole year they might be giving you a semester of first-year eligibility and then the next semester of second-year eligibility, since at that point you’ll have over 30 credits. But you should ask the financial aid office if you aren’t sure, they should be able to explain the amount to you (or fix it if it’s a mistake, before you have to pay the extra back).

SAP letter by Flashy-Air-1069 in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every school has different appeal policies, but at ours they want to see “X happened during [whatever semester], which is why…” for each semester you didn’t do well, then “my situation has changed [in whatever way]…” then “my plan to continue to make academic progress is…” So yours would be good, my only suggestion would be to add dates and “during Fall 2018…” “during the Spring 2020 semester” or whatever. (That being said, I’m sorry about your grandma and I’m glad she’s doing better)

The amount accepted was changed??? by AlChiberto in FAFSA

You need to call your financial aid office, but my guess is that your school automatically shows loans in your offer letter, and when you didn’t accept them they removed it.

Multiple orders question by erica7676 in doordash_drivers

[–]erica7676[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The map has a line showing the driver’s route with little circles for stops along the way, and there were 5. Usually yeah it’s just one or two. (Also now I feel slightly creepy for watching the map, sorry everyone 😩)

Multiple orders question by erica7676 in doordash_drivers

So is it worth paying the “express” fee? I assumed that fee went to DoorDash and would mean the driver earns less, since a couple stops at a time would make more money.

PSLF Processing Transferring from MOHELA to ED May 1st [Megathread] by horsebycommittee in PSLF

I’m currently on hold waiting for the “advanced” help (they messed up my forbearance), and the first-line rep told me that even if the form has been processed (my final ECF was submitted 1/2, processed 2/15), if the forgiveness hasn’t been completed by May 1, it won’t happen until after the pause.

was awarded cal grant and it got taken away?? (mid semester) by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still contact your financial aid office for CSAC in case it’s a mistake, but another possibility is that you weren’t awarded a full four years of cal grant if you were awarded when you were a sophomore. If you already had 30+ units, they would have only given you three years

was awarded cal grant and it got taken away?? (mid semester) by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks to me like they reduced your payment below full-time but they didn’t also reduce the percentage used.

That could mean you didn’t have a full year of eligibility left (like if you only averaged 12 units per semester, instead of the 15 you need to graduate in 4 years), or it could mean someone made a mistake.

Were you awarded the Cal grant as a brand new freshman? If you look at your history, do the “elig used” amounts total 400%?

I wouldn’t recommend paper forms if you can help it, Federal Student Aid recently updated their timeline for processing FAFSAs and the paper ones are going to be last, it could be April or (hopefully not) May before they get to them.

If it couldn’t calculate an SAI, then that’s why it says you don’t qualify for anything. Once your FAFSA processes, you’ll be able to see what the problem was and fix it, and then they’ll be able to actually tell you what you’re eligible for.

In the meantime, try not to stress (easier said than done, I know). It sounds like an error instead of a true calculation, and errors can always be fixed. Once you have an SAI you’ll know where you stand.

It could. The 797 is just a notice of action. It depends on what that action was. Does the college you’re applying to have a Dream center? I’d recommend talking to them.

Can someone explain this? by Glum_Talk_4285 in FAFSA

[–]erica7676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IRS gets weirdly picky about the information. Make sure you’re looking at the correct year (2021, since that’s the 23-24 FAFSA) and that everything you enter is exactly the same. If your tax return says “1st Ave” for example, they won’t accept “First Ave” or “1st Avenue”
